    A New Day

We may struggle remembering things such as names, dates, assignments, and the like. But God has given everyone a way to NEVER FORGET the important things.

Just a simple reminder. As simple as the dawning of a new day.

Each time the sun rises in the east, signifying the beginning of a new day, let that ordinary event remind you of God’s extraordinary promises!

See the rising sun as a simple reminder of “NEW”:

    Covenant – 2 Cor. 3:6
    Creation – 2 Cor. 5:17
    Freedom – 2 Cor. 3:17
    Mind – Rom. 12:1,2
    Provision – Matt. 6:11
    Power – Acts 1:8
    Things – Isa. 43:19
    Comforter – John 14:26
Coming of the Lord – 2 Pet. 3:12
Heaven and Earth – Rev. 21

    and also Lam. 3:22,23
    Compassion
    Hope
    Mercy
    Faithfulness
    Living

Just God’s simple way of saying to us, “If I can make the sun rise each and every day, please know you can trust Me to help with the small things.”

  • The Younger Son A Story – chapter two

    A Story

As I have said before, everyone has a story, and every story should be told. Here’s one Jesus told about a father and his two boys.

“To illustrate the point further, Jesus told them this story: “A man had two sons. The younger son told his father, ‘I want my share of your estate now before you die.’ So his father agreed to divide his wealth between his sons. “A few days later this younger son packed all his belongings and moved to a distant land, and there he wasted all his money in wild living. About the time his money ran out, a great famine swept over the land, and he began to starve. He persuaded a local farmer to hire him, and the man sent him into his fields to feed the pigs. The young man became so hungry that even the pods he was feeding the pigs looked good to him. But no one gave him anything.

“When he finally came to his senses, he said to himself, ‘At home even the hired servants have food enough to spare, and here I am dying of hunger! I will go home to my father and say, “Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son. Please take me on as a hired servant.”’ “So he returned home to his father. And while he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him. His son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son.’ “But his father said to the servants, ‘Quick! Bring the finest robe in the house and put it on him. Get a ring for his finger and sandals for his feet and kill the calf we have been fattening. We must celebrate with a feast for this son of mine was dead and has now returned to life. He was lost, but now he is found.’ So the party began.” (Luke 15:11-24 NLT)

Here’s the story of a father and two sons. Notice, two sons. This chapter will discuss the younger prodigal only. I’ll reserve comments pertaining to the older son for the next chapter.

Note that Jesus told this story to further illustrate a point He made earlier, which was “there is great joy in Heaven when something lost is found.” And if there’s great joy in Heaven, there should be great joy here on earth as well.

If you lose something as common as a paper clip, not much effort is exerted in finding it. Why? Because it is easily replaced and has so little value. But if you lose something, say, your wedding ring, you will not stop looking until it is found. Then, when found, you rejoice with joy unspeakable! The value of the thing lost determines the degree of gratitude.

Remember this: most of the time the thing lost doesn’t realize it’s lost until it’s found. I didn’t understand how lost I was or how much He loved and valued me until He “reached down” through His Son Jesus, and made me a new person.

“A man had two sons. The younger son told his father…” Say what you will, but I really doubt the younger son intended, or planned, on living a wild life separated from his home. He did not plan on getting “lost” anymore than you or I do when we start on a trip with or without directions. Part of growing up is developing independence, which would include trying to make it on his own. Whatever the motive, the father granted his request and divided his wealth between his two sons. Shortly afterward, the younger one hit the road and traveled to a distant land.

Distant land. Ever visit one? So exotic, so appealing, and so much fun! Meet new people, try new food, take gobs of pictures, and experience a side of life many, if not all, of your friends and family have never known.

But this young man didn’t buy a round trip ticket to the distant land. His trip was not a vacation, but a permanent move. He was going to make something of his life. He soon began to walk, talk, think, dream, spend money, and party like the locals. And for a while, all seemed fine.

It’s amazing how well and how quickly the young man could adapt to such a different way of living. Though new to the area, he learned the customs and culture of the land that was far from Father’s Farm.

Popularity. My, how popular this young man became. All the city leaders, merchants, and entertainers welcomed him. His winsome smile, bulging pockets, and small town ways made him an easy target for their schemes designed to separate the man from the money.

Women! He’d never even dreamed of a world like he was experiencing! Why hadn’t his father told him about this side of life? Did his father even know such a place existed? What about his older brother, the “never-spend-a-dime-of-my-own-money” guy? What was he doing with HIS inheritance? Probably the same thing he’d always done with his money. Nothing!

Well, he wasn’t going to act like his older brother! No, sir! He was going to get the most out of life, even if it killed him!

    So…

With every pretty girl hitting on him, merchants and peddlers selling him everything but what he really needed, it didn’t take too long to waste his money, lose his companions, and find himself alone. Alone. Something he hadn’t experienced since leaving home. Alone.

Kind of funny, the things you think about when you’re alone. Memories continue to wash over your mind like waves upon a shore; washing away the hamburger wrappers, used napkins, beer cans and cigarette butts left over from last night’s party. Cleansing your mind, revealing memories of life like it used to be. Life with love. Life with father. If only…

  • Biblical, Spiritual Elders

    Elders

    Biblical, Spiritual Elders

“Doing” church these days can be kind of confusing. Trying to understand terminologies, such as bishop, deacon, head deacon, minister, pastor, elder, and so on can really be overwhelming. Discussing such a topic as Kingdom Leadership can be as challenging as discussing the Holy Spirit’s ministry in a cross-denominational discussion forum. Wide variety of opinions, interpretation of scripture, and personal feelings sometimes find their way into the discussion.

Understanding that dynamic, let me say up front that, though I hold my opinions expressed in this article to be true, I do not, for a minute, believe I have full and complete revelation on the matter. I simply want to share truth as I see it, submit it to other Kingdom Leaders for review and dialog, and continue to grow in Kingdom Leadership effectiveness. And I wouldn’t be surprised to have people write and tell me I need to get a life, or something.

I do not want to “split hairs” with this subject. The Kingdom of God is not in word only, but in power. It’s not what we call ourselves that really matters. Yet we need to understand how Kingdom leadership works, how we submit to it and function in it.

Biblical, spiritual elders. Paul said, “Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.” (Acts 20:27 -28 NKJV) Overseers – elders. The term, Elder, is not just a New Testament term. It was used a lot in the Old Testament when referring to the leaders under Moses, those Joshua appointed, as well as other men and women of God.

Basically, a biblical, spiritual elder is someone ordained and anointed by God, and recognized by other leaders, to help equip, exhort, and encourage the Church. Theirs may not be a widely known ministry , or, they MAY be well known throughout the Body of Christ. They link with others, either on a local scale, such as a local fellowship of believers, or on a much broader scale, such as city-wide, regional, national or even global scale. Point is, they link together for the purpose of governing and directing the Church to enable it to fulfill its divine destiny. Whether their ministry is “small” or “large”, it is indispensible.

An elder can operate as an Apostle, Prophet, or any of the “5-fold” ministries mentioned in Ephesians 4:11. However, in my opinion, they don’t have to be defined or confined by one of the 5 mentioned, to be an elder. They may preach, prophesy, pray, teach or lead worship. Or, they may not be used of God for any of those specific purposes. Or, the opposite may be true. True Apostles, Prophets, etc. are elders, but not all elders are apostles. Peter made a statement in 1 Peter 5:1, “now a word to you who are elders in the churches. I, too, am an elder…as a fellow elder I appeal to you.” (NLT)

It was explained to me, when I asked someone why the word “pastor” isn’t used much in the New Testament, that when the church was first formed the Apostles went around to different fellowships and appointed “elders” – those older, more experienced with life and how to deal with it, to help the younger ones. All were young in the faith. So, it was told me, God had a plan to help the Church grow until more people could be trained to lead.I believe most of that line of reasoning. What I’m not sure about is why the Church has, by and large, dropped “elder” from its lexicon. Now there are people in churches who wear the title of “Elder”, but that’s not what I’m referring to. An old mule could be called a kangaroo, but watch it long enough and you’ll know it’s not a kangaroo.

Biblical, spiritual elders, were established by God as far back as Adam. He was to rule, govern, under the authority of God Almighty. Things got messed up, but that didn’t take away Adam’s calling under God. God helped restore him and, I believe, poured into Adam truth that would affect generations to come. Study it out and you’ll find Adam living long enough to pour truth into many generations! When Adam died, though, people fell further and further from the Truth. Noah, Abraham and sons, Moses. These were all biblical, spiritual elders. They would help govern God’s people, and defend God’s righteous cause. They were people others could go to for counsel and support. People anointed and trusted to uphold truth in the spirit of love. The ones God anointed as judges, they also functioned as elders. The children of Israel did well as long as the judges were around, but when they died, each one did what was right in their own sight.

Reheboam, Solomon’s son, was asked a question pertaining to his new role of leader. He consulted his elders for advice. They told him to loosen the fist of leadership from around the people and they would follow him forever. That’s what the elders said. But he didn’t follow their advice. He followed the advice of his peers, his drinking buddies, who told him to tighten his fist around Israel. That advice split the Kingdom.

It’s good to have peers, partners, people who will agree with your every decision. But God has established elders in the Church. They are to help keep the Church from splitting and falling by the wayside. Even the great man of God, Moses, couldn’t fulfill his calling without the help of elders. Think about this. God used someone not “in the church” to help Moses see that truth!

The church has had elders for a long time. So why are there so many issues and divisions in the church today? Could it be that 1) the church hasn’t paid any attention to elders, not knowing those who labor among them, and 2) the church has paid TOO MUCH attention to them, idolizing them to the point of unsure footing? Unsure footing? Standing on man-made “truth” mixed with God’s Word. Shaky ground.

Use a concordance and look at the references for “Elder”. You’ll discover these truths about biblical, spiritual elders:

    1. Elders have authority and responsibility to shepherd the church (see Isaiah 40:11)

    2. Elders can carry on kingdom work even if the leader is absent

    3. Elders are aware of “the times” and act appropriately.

    4. Elders will follow the lead of spiritual authority, obey the placement (around the tabernacle), and receive the same spirit as their leader.

    5. Elders witness transactions / deals made. They sit at the gate to rule, judge, and determine who enters, who trades and peddles, and see to it that justice and mercy work hand in hand.

    6. Elders’ experience, as well as their spiritual insight, help them govern.

    7. Elders have a direct bearing on the spiritual condition in the land.

    8. Elders identify with the spiritual condition left them by previous generations and seek to rectify or build on the condition.

Whichever term you decide to use when referring to God given, God anointed, spiritual leadership, don’t forget their place in the Body of Christ. Remember James, “anyone sick…let him call for the ELDERS of the church…”? Elders. Might be a pastor, might be a prophet. Might be…but should be an elder.

I believe the Lord is saying He is “raising up people who will function in the Church, and in the world (Moses “communicating” with Pharaoh) as biblical, spiritual elders. Unknown by many, not wearing a particular title or badge, but walking in heaven’s authority. They will function as elder’s of old. Fire will fall from heaven as they speak heaven’s word. Miracles will multiply and Jesus will be magnified. Man’s “High Places” of idol worship will be distinguished between My place of True Worship. ”

“The end is close. The work is great. The Anointing of Jesus more than adequate! Be who you were made to be – recognize your place and others in the Body of Christ – and understand the Body functions as ONE.”

    Elders. Not just a name.

  • God SO LOVES the World

    20130127-082109.jpg

“For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16 NLT)

“For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love. When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good. But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. And since we have been made right in God’s sight by the blood of Christ, he will certainly save us from God’s condemnation.” (Romans 5:5-9 NLT)

“For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.” (Luke 19:10 NLT)

There are so many things to discuss regarding the love of God. But as I sit and meditate on His love, one particular facet shines brighter than the rest…

He came looking for me. He wouldn’t let me lie in the mess I made, didn’t throw His hands in the air and say, “What’s the use?” He couldn’t bear the thought of me living eternally without Him, or He without me!

We were made for each other! I was created for Him, and He gave His best for me.

He came looking for me! I heard Him calling my name as I hid behind the lilac bushes.

    “Adam!” “Adam!” “Where are you?”

I remember thinking, “why does He need to ask? I’m sure He could walk right to me.”

I stayed in hiding as long as I could. He kept calling, calling, calling my name, “Adam!”

At first I thought He was calling out my name in anger. Maybe my conscience was telling me that. Or, I could have been hearing the voice of the serpent who was hiding beside me, telling me God was going to beat me back into the dust for disobeying Him. Yes, now I’m sure it was the serpent’s voice.

But the more I heard God call my name, the more I heard something much different, much stronger than anger. I heard love!

I heard love! I heard Him shout my name in love. I heard Him whisper it, barely audible, but I heard it. And the more I heard His voice, the more I wanted to leave my place of hiding and find refuge in His arms.

I finally got up and left the serpent behind, still hissing his lies, accusations, and hatred.

Love came looking for me! I had to respond.

“Don’t you see how wonderfully kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you? Does this mean nothing to you? Can’t you see that his kindness is intended to turn you from your sin?” (Romans 2:4 NLT)

  • Are We Really “One Nation” Anymore?

    20130125-021918.jpg

Just some simple observations and a very important question.

The observations: there are so many conversations, Internet postings, radio talk shows (including short wave), regarding this present Administration regarding gun laws, healthcare, disregard for the Constitution, cover-ups such as Benghazi and Fast and Furious, the economy, and dictator-type leadership from the President.

So much unrest and discord. Remind’s me of the 60’s, except television and music were a lot better (in my opinion). So much polarization…

The question? With obvious tension growing minute by minute, is the United States of America headed for another Civil War?

    I hope not.

Our spiritual enemy enjoys sowing discord and division among brothers, churches, companies, nations. In fact, he is a covenant breaker by nature. He operates behind the scenes, manipulating and maneuvering people into deep seated hatred and violence.

We must understand we will either allow this present condition to unite us or divide us. May God help us realize who the real enemy is and act accordingly.

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places (Ephesians 6:12 NKJV)

  • Nothing But A Name

    Got Jesus

Before the church had disciples – it had converts

Before the church had converts – it had evangelism

Before the church had evangelism – it had power

Before the church had power – it had its commission

Before the church had its commission – it had relationship

Before the church had relationship – it had nothing but a name.

Nothing but a Name, but what a Name!

The Name that means salvation to any people group, any social status, any age.

The Name the wicked mock, the righteous bless, the angels praise, and demons curse.

The Name that heals the sick, raises the dead, restores broken homes, unites parents with their children, gives peace throughout any storm, and breaks all addictions.

The Name beyond comprehension, above all powers and principalities, seated on the Highest Throne in the universe.

The Name Father God used to express Himself and His Word.

The Name that is the exact representation of His likeness.

    The Name – Jesus!

Nothing but a Name, but what else could anyone ever need?

  • “Go and do the same”

    20130122-041801.jpg

“One day an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus by asking him this question: “Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus replied, “What does the law of Moses say? How do you read it?” The man answered, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.’ And, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.

Right!” Jesus told him. “Do this and you will live!”

The man wanted to justify his actions, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

Jesus replied with a story: “A Jewish man was traveling from Jerusalem down to Jericho, and he was attacked by bandits. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him up, and left him half dead beside the road.

“By chance a priest came along. But when he saw the man lying there, he crossed to the other side of the road and passed him by. A Temple assistant walked over and looked at him lying there, but he also passed by on the other side. “Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt compassion for him. Going over to him, the Samaritan soothed his wounds with olive oil and wine and bandaged them. Then he put the man on his own donkey and took him to an inn, where he took care of him. The next day he handed the innkeeper two silver coins, telling him, ‘Take care of this man. If his bill runs higher than this, I’ll pay you the next time I’m here.’ “Now which of these three would you say was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by bandits?” Jesus asked.

The man replied, “The one who showed him mercy.”

Then Jesus said, “Yes, now go and do the same.””(Luke 10:25-37 NLT)

The “Good Samaritan”, a story of hope, restoration, encouragement, healing, and compassion. It’s ALSO a story of people who COULD help, but for some reason, chose not to.

It illustrates the truth revealed in 1 Corinthians 4:20 – “For the Kingdom of God is not just a lot of talk; it is living by God’s power.”(NLT)

I ask you, what greater power is there than love?

I think everyone in the world can quote John 3:16, “for God so loved the world…”, but there is a verse in First John 3:16 and 18 that is a Word from the loving God to us, and one we need to know as well- “We know what real love is because Jesus gave up his life for us. So we also ought to give up our lives for our brothers and sisters…Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions.”(NLT)

The Good Samaritan had the opportunity to help because at least three others chose not to! The robbers left the Jew naked and dying, the lead pastor (by the way,not responsible for the Jew’s predicament) chose to cross the road and walk on by, and the associate pastor did the same.

Each person COULD have and SHOULD have helped. I suppose the lead pastor and the associate pastor could have given the dying man some cash and some booklets on healing and prosperity before they crossed the road. They may have even given the guy a copy of my book, The Power Of Encouragement.

Regardless of the fact those two weren’t responsible for the condition they FOUND the dying man in, they WERE responsible for the condition they LEFT him in.

Maybe the preachers thought someone else would come along with more time, more resources, and better trained. “After all”, they thought, “there are people a lot more suited for this type of work than I am. Besides, he has lots of friends throughout this area who can help.”

But the man was dying, already half dead. No guarantees more help would come. But the first two men chose to walk on by.

Think about this: if the lead pastor would have stopped to help, the associate pastor and the Samaritan would have been available to help others; and The Lord knows there’s plenty of needs to go around!

Let’s do good as we have the opportunity. Usually, hurting people aren’t real picky about who drives the ambulance.

Jesus described the Samaritan as, “Good”. How would He describe you?

  • No Brag, Just Fact

    20130121-195116.jpg

As a kid, I enjoyed watching “The Guns of Will Sonnett”, starring Walter Brennan. The show only ran for a few seasons, but it was fun while it lasted.

“This series starred veteran character actor Walter Brennan as Will Sonnett, and Dack Rambo as his grandson, Jeff, who were searching for Will’s son and Jeff’s father, James. Disgusted with his father’s being absent on army-scout business more often than not, James (also called Jim) had disappeared at the age of seventeen. A few years later, a baby boy was delivered to Will, with a letter identifying him as James’ son. It went on to say that his mother had died in childbirth, and that not very many people get a second chance in life, but this was one for Will. The young boy was raised by his grandfather, who was grateful for the opportunity and did the best that he could to steer the grandson in the right direction.”

“The elder Sonnett was capable with firearms and often spoke to strangers about this prowess in a way that intimidated them. In the first episode, he mentions that his son is an expert with guns, while his grandson is better, “and I’m better than both of ’em — no brag, just fact.” This last phrase appeared frequently on the show, and became a catch phrase with many of the show’s younger fans.”
    – From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia –

Think about the “second chance in life” Will Sonnett received. Wow! Who couldn’t use something like that? I mean, who couldn’t benefit from such an offer!

The year was 1975. For several months something was happening in my mind, actually deeper than my mind but I couldn’t explain it any better at the time. Know what I mean? Something was happening and all I kept thinking was “something is missing in my life.”

Finally I figured it out. I needed God! I needed to know this Jesus people were telling me about. I needed a change in my life only He could bring. I needed to be “born again.” I needed, I needed, I needed!

We ALL are so needy, so desperately needy for God.

The process was simple. The exchange, instantaneous. I gave my life to Him, and He gave His life to me. I finally took Him at His Word and confessed Him as my Lord and Savior. He took my life, buried it in Himself, and raised me to new life. He now calls me His own.

I haven’t “arrived” and I’m not the picture of perfection, but I’m enjoying the grace and forgiveness of God. I’m living this “second chance”. This life is so full and exciting! To experience the Presence of the Living God throughout the day is beyond my ability to fully explain. And, when this life is finished…well,

The best is yet to come!

I am born of God, a new creation in Christ, living and enjoying my new life, my second chance, in Him.

    No brag, just fact!

  • He Has Me Covered

    20130118-102619.jpg

Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him. For he will rescue you from every trap and protect you from deadly disease. He will cover you with his feathers.
He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection.
    (Psalm 91:1-4 NLT)

“He will cover you…His faithful promises are your armor and protection”

Protection from what? Armor for what?
From every trap and from every disease. The Psalmist also adds cobras, lions, serpents, and trouble to the list of things God’s promises protect us, cover us, from.

Traps such as deceit, pride, lust, bitterness, and other evil schemes the enemy of our soul lays for us. Traps that are well hidden, completely out of sight until our feet step into them.

His promises can also cover us from ourselves! Our traditions, our viewpoints, our reasonings, our education…can sometimes stand between us and the promises of God.

I’m realizing just how much covering I need. I see people I really care about not acting like I would like them to act. Without His covering, I can allow my thoughts and reasonings to run wild. Before long, I am so far removed from faith in His Word I have a hard time battling doubts, anger, and depression.

But He covers me. He covers you.

Proverbs 28:13 says, “he who covers his sin shall not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them shall find mercy.” I cannot cover, or hide, behind how good or bad I am, or have been. Neither can you. But as we are open with God He covers us with His mercy. His Mercy!

1 Peter 4:8 – “…show deep love for each other, because love covers a multitude of sin.” Love covers those who haven’t earned the covering! It covers those who CAN’T earn it. That’s all of us!

Romans 2:4 – “…the goodness of God leads people to repentance.”

We must be covered with His promises. The world around us, our loved ones, our friends, our enemies NEED us to be covered! For our covering will keep us, including our hearts and minds, where we should be…

Believing God for His Kingdom to come, and for His will to be done in the lives of those we care about…better yet, in the lives of those HE CARES ABOUT!

Where are you abiding? Who’s secret place are you hiding in? What is your armor and protection?

“Under His wings shall I trust.”
