  • Gifts and Callings…

    20130214-001930.jpg

I think the song went something like, “I’m eighteen and I like it!”. That was me. Married and 18, with visions of becoming a rock and roll star dancing in my head. Christian? Nah, didn’t have the slightest interest in God, Jesus, Church, or anything associated with that sort of stuff. Little did I know…

“For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.”(Romans 11:29 NKJV)

I didn’t believe in God but He believed in me. I wasn’t seeking Him, but He was in hot pursuit of me. He didn’t fit in my plans, yet somehow I fit into His. Simply amazing.

Anyone who has ever graced this planet has somehow fit into God’s plan. He has given everyone gifts and callings. Abilities that make the Kingdom of God shine even brighter, when used for the Glory and purposes of God.

Think about your life. Did you know that God has given you gifts and callings? He has something just for you. No one else can take your place. Whether you believe in Him or not, He believes in you.

I was about 21 when He finally broke through my walls of resistance. The gifts and callings? They became less important to ME, but the Lord started His training program with me and began to reveal in me how my gifts were meant to serve the calling He gave me. In fact, I’m still in training!

You see, He plans to use my gifts and calling for all eternity, not just until I’m dead and gone.

Imagine what He’s placed in you. What could He do with someone like you submitted to someone like Him?

    Only eternity has the answer.

  • What Encourages YOU?

    20130213-051853.jpg

I’m taking a survey. I’m wondering what things encourage you?

What lifts you when you’re down?

What gives you courage to face the unfaceable?

How do you find strength to do the impossible?

What gets you off the bench of self-pity and back into the game of life?

What is the adrenalin for your soul? A word spoken by a real friend, a helping hand when your two aren’t enough?

Do you prefer a note, letter, email, or phone call from a friend?

Does God ever encourage you? How?

When you’ve “drawn the blinds” to your world, put your phone on silent, and placed yourself on the island of Me-Only, what brings you back to the land called Life?

How do you tell the difference between pity and encouragement?

When you find yourself stumbling through the valley of the shadow of death, what gets you through?

We may think we’ve encouraged someone (we feel good), but may have totally missed the mark. So this question isn’t “how do you encourage others?”

    No, the question is…

    What encourages YOU?

    Thanks for replying!

  • The Master Plan… my short story

Jan and Phyllis2It was a dark and dreary night, which seemed to last a lifetime.

In fact, it was lasting a lifetime. The first 20 years of my life.

Darkness and chaos describe my early years. Oh, sure, there were glimpses of light and order, hope and joy, now and then. But dreariness described my life as a whole.

Kind of like when “in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth”. There wasn’t a sign in the heavens inviting change. No. Darkness, disorder, decadence, and dismay screamed constantly at Him and His plans, “We cannot, will not, be changed. We will forever remain like this!” That seemed to describe my life.

But, the entrance of His Word brought light; and the rest, they say, is history.

I had times, as a kid, really enjoyed my life and thought things were great. Like the times we’d have the neighborhood over and play ball in our backyard. Kids everywhere, running, laughing, without a care in the world. Or the time the ice cream truck would come down the street, beckoning us with its happy tune. All the neighborhood kids would stop what they were doing, run to find their parents, and literally beg them into buying a Buried Treasure, Drumstick, or some other sweet and cold treat. Ah, the good old days.

There were a few times of hope and joy as a teenager, but those years were primarily filled with strife and unrest. Not much hope for the future. No promise of life, that I could see anyway. Have you ever known someone who seemed to be okay and in great health, but was really losing a battle with cancer? That’s how my life was. Looked alright on the outside, but inside I was dying. If something happened I didn’t like, couldn’t control, or attacked my vulnerable heart, I would pack up and leave. I tried fighting back, but eventually concluded leaving was the best way to preserve what life I had.

A few people told me about this Man named Jesus. Fairytale stuff, as far as I was concerned. Besides, I didn’t need religion. Darkness and chaos were serving me just fine. It was something I was used to.

When I was 17, darkness seemed to ease up a bit. I met this girl who began to love me; darkness, chaos, hurt and all. I was so energized by her, hope for the future began to grow. Plans for a life together were forming. Buying an old “Bread Truck” decorated with colorful flowers, travelling the country, playing music, seeing the sights, living the dream, became known to us as “The Master Plan”.

We finally did get married and started living the Plan. No bread truck, just a cool 1964 Rambler Classic 770 named “Roger”. Life was but a dream, sh-boom, sh-boom.

Something happened during our second year of living our dream. I can’t really explain it. I only know we met this couple who had a “light” shining in their life. Love and life seemed to exude from them, attacking the darkness surrounding us; as though God was looking at our world, commanding His light to shine in our dark places.

    Light be! Light was!

“In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.” “He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of Life.”

That was close to forty years ago. Never did get a bread truck. We have done some traveling, played some music, lived a few dreams, had a few nightmares. But we discarded the Master Plan. Traded it in for something full of love, life and hope. A future and a hope! We call it “The Master’s Plan.”

And the rest is, as they say, His Story.

If darkness and chaos has filled your life, there is a God in Heaven Who knows how to change your world.

  • An Open Letter To Our Sons & Daughters

    Pen and Paper

“An ‘Open Letter’ to our sons and daughters.”

He shows mercy from generation to generation to all who fear him. (Luke 1:50 NLT)

But you, O Lord , will sit on your throne forever. Your fame will endure to every generation. (Psalm 102:12 NLT)

Let this be recorded for future generations, so that a people not yet born will praise the Lord . (Psalm 102:18 NLT)

I’m not old, but I’m also not young. There are probably more years behind me than I have left on earth. As I watch my generation’s sons and daughters take their place in society, and especially The Church, I am excited and grieved about what I see.

This “Open Letter” isn’t just my opinion about how things “should” be done in the church. It isn’t about temptations I see your generation succumbing to. My desire is to speak wisdom into your life. May you leave a greater legacy for God than those before you.

I’m not going to rail on you for having tattoos, certain philosophies of ministry, liberalism in the church, piercings and ear gauges, or an ultra conservative worldview. I just won’t do it.

I don’t want you to think I consider myself an expert on anything. Actually, my only credential is my age, my experience. Of course, with my experience comes some personal pitfalls life can bring, and the testimonies of God’s grace, mercy, forgiveness, and power.

So this letter is for you, the younger, more talented, quicker and smarter than I. It’s purpose is to help connect my generation and yours, for the Kingdom of God.

Please allow me to begin with some apologies. I apologize personally, and on behalf of those in my generation who have not done a very good job of running the “race”, or of “passing the baton” of faith. My generation has been one of self-indulgence, breeding independence (rather than inter-dependence), selfishness, and a party mentality. We’ve done such a fine job of cultivating that mentality, or spirit, you can go anywhere in this country and easily spot it. Even in the church.

I apologize for making “ministry” something God never intended it to be. I put such an importance on “working for God” I sometimes didn’t accurately express my faith, or struggles, with those I loved. I felt I needed to carry myself a certain way, to where I wasn’t quite sure if even the Lord recognized me. I lived a hypocritical life, preaching one thing but living something different. No wonder the hand-off has been rough.

Most of the time, my mistakes, my sins, were unintentional. Unfortunately, that doesn’t change anything. If I had it to do all over, I’d probably do some of the same things again. And I’d be wrong. But no one on earth has the luxury of seeing Heaven’s perspective about everything. We can only do what we can, learn from each other’s experience, and continue to do our best, with God’s help.

So, with my apologies made, and my heart transparent, I’d like to share a few thoughts one generation should say to the next.

    Here goes…

First thought – hold fast to Truth.

We will not hide these truths from our children; we will tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the Lord, about his power and his mighty wonders. (Psalm 78:4 NLT)

He always stands by his covenant – the commitment he made to a thousand generations (Psalm 105:8 NLT)

After that generation died, another generation grew up who did not acknowledge the Lord or remember the mighty things he had done for Israel (Judges 2:10 NLT)

There IS such a thing as “Absolute Truth”. Truth has always been truth whether anyone knows it, believes it, or shares it. Truth isn’t truth because it receives the most votes or gets the most “likes” on Facebook. It is not based on popularity. It can’t belong to one group of people, denomination, political party, ethnicity, gender, age, social status, or occupation any more than another.

Yet truth must be sought, believed, and embraced. It must be shared, unaltered. Altered truth becomes a false truth, which isn’t truth at all. Truth must be passed on from generation to generation, or each generation will walk farther and farther away from it.

Truth, usually, is revealed in bits and pieces, increments, much like a puzzle picture becomes clearer with each added piece. That’s why it is ever so important for you to keep seeking truth, and it’s sole Author. He is the One Who has the ability to open your understanding even to the concept of absolute truth.

Don’t cheat your neighbor by moving the ancient boundary markers set up by previous generations (Proverbs 22:28 NLT)

I’ve noticed the idea of absolute truth is hard for some to handle. Some use it to try and control others, manipulating others to do what they want them to do. They hold “truth” over other lives like a club of sorts. They even blame God for the way they act, saying they’re just defending truth.

Others propound the idea truth must be redefined for each generation. But as Proverbs talks about not moving the “ancient boundaries”, to change the meaning and substance of truth every twenty to thirty years is like moving someone’s property line every so often. Someone is going to be cheated.

I feel each generation really struggles with the process of handing off the baton of truth. Because truth can make someone very uncomfortable and demand much change, it is easier to compromise just a little to make it more acceptable and less divisive.

But someone gets cheated! Someone loses each time the fence is moved. I believe each generation has become more “cheated” than the previous one. As the world continues to spin, almost out of control, the church is allowing more and more “property lines” to be violated.

Sons and daughters, like it, believe it, embrace it or not; you are now being called upon by The Truth Himself to stand for truth. The Holy Spirit wants to show you where the old “fenceposts” of truth really should be. To give you revelation from the Word so you can regain the ground lost through compromise. Future generations are, right now, in your care. My hope and prayer is for you to be better stewards of Truth than your predecessors.

Please search the Scriptures and the God of the Scriptures. Let the Lord show you “the property lines” like He did for Abraham, Moses, and Joshua. Find out what Peter meant when he wrote “God has given us all things that pertain to life and godliness…”

Second thought – prepare for God’s outpouring (3 parts)

    a) Prepare to speak.

‘In the last days,’ God says, ‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams. In those days I will pour out my Spirit even on my servants – men and women alike – and they will prophesy.” (Acts 2:17,18 NLT)

I personally believe we are living in the last of the last days. Sons and daughters, I believe you will see the Coming of the Lord. I share this next part with that belief in mind.

God says He’ll pour out His Spirit upon all people. All people. The context of this scripture is interesting, and needs to be understood. On the Day of Pentecost, there were people, Jews, gathered from all over the Roman Empire, and beyond. They had gathered to worship, to celebrate. God used that opportunity to send the Holy Spirit to the 120 believers in the upper room AND those gathered for the Feast.

Now, please don’t stop reading because I said something that made your mind tilt. You may think the Spirit was poured out upon JUST the believers in Jesus. That’s true, to a degree. But multitudes, “all people”, were affected to the point they began to say, “what’s going on around here?” Sure, those gathered heard the commotion and probably saw the fire (Acts 2:1-4). But when God pours out His Spirit it isn’t just for the Elect. He’s not willing any perish. Since the Spirit is the One Who draws souls into the Kingdom, it stands to reason God didn’t flood just the 120 with His Spirit.

I believe God is in the process of pouring out His Spirit in unfathomable measures. As it was back 2000 years ago, so it is today. People are sensing a spiritual “tug” on their hearts, a hunger for spiritual things. But without clear direction from a Son and Daughter of God, all they can say is “what’s this mean?” Thank the Lord, Peter heard the questions and was able to say, “This is that!”

This is one reason why God says His sons and daughters will prophesy. Not necessarily talk about the future, but declare to your world what God IS doing! You see, when people are questioning the “now”, speaking of tomorrow doesn’t resonate. They need a NOW word from a NOW God, through sons and daughters anointed to understand and speak into others lives. If no one is speaking Truth with Heaven’s unction, people who are asking the questions will come up with their own answers; or fall for anything “spiritual” that comes along.

To prophesy is to speak with God’s inspiration, His unction. It’s to take the Word being communicated in Heaven and declare it on earth. The Word God is speaking RIGHT NOW. The Word we are supposed to “live by”; that which proceeds from the mouth of God (Matthew 4:4).

So in these last days the Lord is looking for, and finding, sons and daughters to speak the RIGHT NOW word, telling all who ask “what does this mean?”, “this is that!”

There’s something else to expect and prepare for as the Spirit is poured out.

    b) Prepare to see.

You will see visions. You will gaze upon the work God is doing, see the people who are asking the questions, and understand by inspiration of God what needs to be done in order to connect the Question with the Answer. God will supernaturally show you how to make Heaven’s will done on earth. You will see things as they can and should be. You will see scriptures “opened up” as never before. You will see ways to minister that may seem odd to some, but right to God. You will say along with Jesus, “I only do things I see my Father do.”

I believe our young men and women will see visions revealing God’s love for all mankind, like Peter did. A vision that opens the eyes of God’s sons and daughters to see the value of everyone. Over the last 10 – 20 years there’s been a huge push toward diversity and value. Society has been inundated with teaching and training of all kinds concerning diversity, tolerance, and value. At the same time, hate crimes and bullying have been on the rise. People are at a loss for words and can’t seem to understand “what’s this mean?” Many are buying the idea that man, apart from his Creator, is capable of fixing all his societal and relational issues.

But God will give you eyes to see, and the ability to speak His value into each life.

Sounds wonderful, and I am beginning to see signs of it happening. Yet there’s one more aspect of the Outpouring I want to emphasize. One more thing I want to add to this open letter.

    c) Prepare to be shepherded.

Shepherd – “to give advice and instruction to (someone) regarding the course or process to be followed.”

“Your old men (and women) will dream dreams.”

Dream. To see a vision while asleep.

“Those in the latter stages of life shall continue to see what God’s doing, though they lie in a state of repose. Their physical activity may be diminished, but they are still connected with God’s plans and purposes. They see where they’re going, and know where they’ve been.” (my expanded paraphrase of the above quote)

I see this as such a vital part of God’s Outpouring. The young and the old working together to answer the questions the Spirit’s Presence stirs within people. The young, learning from, being mentored by, the old. The old, gracefully and prayerfully encouraging the young to rise up and take their positions in the Kingdom of God.

As an older man, this subject is very near my heart. I have sensed for several years a new, possibly final, outpouring of God’s Spirit on the horizon. God is anointing and raising up a new generation of spiritual leaders.

My word to you is simple. Connect with the “dreamers”. Allow them to speak into your life. Encourage them to “shepherd” you, “giving advice and instruction regarding the course or process to be followed.” Draw from them wisdom gleaned through years of walking with God. Receive their insight, prayers, and correction. Let the foundation and platform they have built with God help establish and lift you to do even greater things.

    Finally…

Third thought – live your life with purpose.

When you’re young, there’s a feeling of invincibility. I remember being in my teens, then my 20’s and 30’s. I could whip the world, drive all night, move pianos, plant a church; whatever I wanted to do, I believed I could do it. And time flew by.

Now I’m almost 60. I sure would like to have known then what I know now. I would have lived more “on purpose”; loved on purpose, prayed on purpose, even played on purpose. I’d have followed Paul’s advice more closely.

“Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do. Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit…” (Ephesians 5:16 – 5:18 NLT)

Throughout this nation, there’s the mentality of fun and entertainment. Entertainment isn’t necessarily wrong, but it can become such a time waster. The Lord knows I wasted way too much time over the years. Entertainment, whether movies, games, television, music, can be a good relaxation tool, or a huge diversion, a distraction, from what’s really important.

“…but understand what the Lord wants you to do.” This is the key for living your life on purpose. Understand what He wants you to do, then do it with all your might.

There are many things, even good things, things other people seem to “get by with” doing, but in the end only rob you of time, influence, and opportunity. Don’t let yourself get pulled into that way of thinking. You are called of God, called to make a difference, anointed to speak to your generation, equipped to see things through God’s eyes.

There are people, imperfect but powerful men and women of God, who have served in the Kingdom of God with integrity. “Faithful” is what the Lord calls them. They have built, with God’s help, that which you and others are inheriting.

These men and women of God have been given, at this time, the highest, most important calling of their entire lives. They’ve been called to dream, to incorporate the things God has done in the past, connecting them with what He’s doing today. To shepherd sons and daughters like yourself and help equip you with the spirit of integrity and faithfulness.

God will finish His awesome work! Heaven’s grandstand will be rocking with celebration as we each find our place in His work, living our life on purpose.

The “generation gap” doesn’t exist in God’s work. Let’s join together, each doing our part.

Sons and daughters, I love you. I believe God will do greater things through you than He has through me, and my generation.

And I will help in any way I can.

    Thanks for reading.

  • Faith Comes… (Relationship and Repetition)

    20130208-041619.jpg

Let’s talk about something everyone has to deal with. Something EVERYONE has experience with.

    Faith.

What’s that? You say you’re not a religious person? An atheist? Agnostic?
Well then, let’s just leave God out of this conversation; for a while, at least.

    Faith.

Have you ever considered the dynamics of faith? Faith in a good friend’s word or promise? Or, faith in an enemy’s word or promise? How can their word be so important, so powerful? How is faith in someone developed?

    Relationship and repetition.

It is almost impossible to believe someone you don’t know. Someone you have no experience with. Yet, though you may not have enough experience with someone to take them at their word, you still have a degree of faith where they’re concerned. You may actually know, or believe, that “someone” can’t be trusted at all! But that’s faith. That’s what you believe.

What you believe is so powerful, it controls your life!

My dad used to tell me, “I can’t make you do anything; but I can make you wish you had of.” Meaning, of course, I’d better consider my next step, for it will determine his. Though no one may be able to MAKE you, or FORCE you to do anything, what you believe will govern your actions throughout life. Like a lamb to the slaughter, or an eaglet flying for the first time. You will say things, do things, or not say or do something…because of faith.

There is only one thing in the universe stronger than faith. Love. Yet love and faith work side by side. When you have a hard time believing, faith is propped up by love. You want to keep believing because you love. Love, at times, must be held onto with the only grip you can muster; faith.

Who in your life do you believe? In whom do you trust? Why? Remember, we’re not referring to God at this moment. But why do you trust whom you trust?

Is it because you have experienced life together? Has the person you trust made promises to you and followed through, actually doing what they promised to do? Do you trust someone because of a faithful friend’s word?

    Relationship and repetition.

The more someone is trusted, the greater the relationship develops, the more powerful faith is. This is where repetition comes in to play. You hear a word, a promise from your friend. You trust their word. They honor their promise. Your trust, faith grows. The more they promise, the more you trust. As long as they continue to honor their word, your faith in them grows and grows and grows and…

To where someday, during a time of fellowship with your friend, he tells you to take your teenage son to a certain mountain, and offer him as a sacrifice. Your son. The one who was given to you by your friend. The son whom your friend had promised was to be a blessing to all the world! And, because of faith, you do it! (At least you attempt to, until your friend stops you)

Now, let’s allow God to join us, eh?

“So faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ.”
    (Romans 10:17 NLT)

Faith in God comes the same way we discussed earlier. Relationship. Even a “little” relationship, one filled with doubt, skepticism, anger; whatever. It’s a start.

    Relationship and repetition.

Telling God you don’t believe in Him, let alone trust Him. Yelling at God in anger over the loss of a loved one…

    Relationship and repetition.

Will you say to God anything and everything you want? He knows you want to. It’s part of relationship. And will you allow Him the honor, and the opportunity, of speaking into your life. A word here, a promise there. The more He speaks, the more you listen, the more He acts, the more you believe. The more you believe, the more you act upon His word.

    Relationship and repetition.

  • Blessed!

    20130205-121529.jpg

“And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: “Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, ‘This is the way you shall bless the children of Israel.

Say to them, “The LORD bless you and keep you; The LORD make His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you; The LORD lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace.” ’

“So they shall put My name on the children of Israel, and I will bless them.”(Numbers 6:24-27 NKJV)

    Blessed!

The Hebrew word, barak, means to kneel, to bless God (as an act of adoration), and man (as a benefit).

It has always been God’s will for His creation to be blessed; to enjoy all the benefits He prepared for them. Yes, there was the rebellion which took place, but The Lord still had a passion and a plan to bless His people.

He told Moses to instruct Aaron to bless the people, impart the will of God to them, by SAYING. Aaron would speak to the children of Israel the word of God, His revealed will, and God equated that with putting His Name on them.

According to God, they were blessed with benefits and protection, fellowship and favor, deliverance, healing, and wholeness of spirit, soul, and body. This is what God desired for them and delivered to them, through the words of Aaron.

That was the Old Covenant. The New Covenant, established upon greater promises, has not diminished the blessings of God. Rather, He has secured, guaranteed the blessings through Jesus Christ.

“God sent Jesus to bless you, by turning each of you from your sins.” Acts 3:26, paraphrased.

But do the blessings and benefits really pertain to this present life, or the one to come?

    Both!

Ephesians 1:3, “He has blessed us with all spiritual blessings, in Christ Jesus…” Spiritual blessings aren’t just those that touch the spirit of a man. They are blessings originating from, and distributed by the Spirit. They affect every area of our life, for He has given us ALL THINGS that pertain to life and godliness. Blessed in Jesus!

“Beloved, I pray of above things that you prosper and be in health, even as your soul prospers.” 3 John 2

Under the Old Covenant, David blessed The Lord because He “daily loaded him with benefits.”

    The New is better.

Under the Old, the psalmist declared, “I will say of The Lord, He is my Refuge and my Fortress…” and ,”He forgives all my sins and heals all my diseases…”

    The New is better!

The Old Covenant kept the plan of God intact, until The New Covenant was established in Christ.

    The New is better!

Blessed going out and coming in. Blessed in giving and receiving, planting and harvesting. Blessed because He sent His Word to heal us and deliver us from all our afflictions. http://clicktotweet.com/t3SO4

Just as the High Priest, Aaron, spoke the Word of blessing over the children of Israel, so the High Priest of the New Covenant, Jesus, God’s Living Word, speaks over (and into) us.

Our response, our amen, our part is to receive the Blessing of God. Jesus, THE Blessing of God!

We are blessed in Jesus because He says so! We agree so by believing God raised Jesus from the dead, and by declaring Jesus the Lord of our life.

“And let the redeemed of The Lord say so!”

    BLESSED! It is so!

  • Created for Generosity

    Generosity

    God is generous!

    God is very generous!

Generosity is one of His characteristics. It’s as much a part of Him as is Love and Truth. Holiness and Righteousness cannot exist without Love, Truth, AND Generosity.

Grace would be of no help, could not assist a soul, without Generosity. For Grace is “God’s willingness to use His power and ability to help those who need His assistance, but can’t earn it.”

If God wasn’t generous, this world would not exist as we know it, for all of creation was designed by God to give, to help, to build. Even the sun, moon and stars give. The earth, clouds, trees, etc., all give. While not all things are physically able to give immediately after being created (such as plants and people), all creation is designed to give into the big picture – God’s Creation.

God has built that same characteristic into His New Creation; those who have been created in Christ Jesus by virtue of the new birth. (2 Cor. 5:17)

As born again children of God, we were created to be generous, to be givers. In fact, to be the opposite- stingy, cheap, and selfish, is to not allow God’s new nature to grow and develop in our life.

Remember the “Fruit of the Spirit” as mentioned in Galatians 5:22,23? “…the fruit of the Spirit IS…”, singular. Then there are 9 qualities or attributes mentioned. But grouped together they are one. Generosity, in my opinion, is evident in all 9. Remove generosity from love, or joy, or peace, or…how could any one of those attributes do anything? Why, they wouldn’t, couldn’t, be shared.

You see, love has to be shared. Joy has to be enjoyed by others, or what’s the use?

Here are a few scriptures that will help us understand generosity a little better.

“The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed.” (Proverbs 11:25 NLT)

In other words, the generous, benevolent person will prosper, be anointed with the same anointing that breaks yokes of bondage. The Hebrew word for “rich” is translated “fat” and means specifically “anointed” or “to be made fat”. It also means “satisfied” and “satiated”. The word “refresh” is also translated “waters” and carries with it the idea – refresh, fill, satiate, bathe entirely, inundate others with generosity. So the generous one, the one who pours into another life to refresh it, make it fat (anoint), bathe it entirely, satiate it, will themselves be targeted, aimed at for God’s blessing and favor. They will grow fat with the anointing of God, becoming more fruitful and generous with each growing season.

“As a man sows, that’s how he’ll reap.” Galatians 6:7

We live on what we reap, not what we sow. A farmer does not go to his barn, grab his seed, take it to his kitchen and start eating it. Seeds are designed to produce after their kind, and much more than was planted, but they must be “given away”, or planted. The end result of planting will be more to eat and more to plant.

2 Corinthians 9:10 says, “now may He who supplies seed to the sower, and bread for food, supply and multiply the seed you have sown and increase the fruits of your righteousness.” NLT

Notice this: there is something called “seed” and something else called “bread”. We need to know the difference. You plant seed and eat bread, not the other way around. Everyone has something they can and should use for seed, and something else for bread. Seed is for others, bread is for yourself. Plant the bread and eat the seed…well, you won’t last long. But follow God’s principles of generosity, you will always have enough and more besides.

I’ll say it again. EVERYONE has seed and bread. You may be as “poor as Job’s turkey”, but you have seed to sow. If you are alive you have something to give! It may not be money, but money isn’t the most valuable commodity on earth. It might be time, a loving gesture, or a number of other things. A stingy heart will take inventory of the seed and give the least amount, that which is easily replaced, won’t be missed, not worth much, etc. The generous soul will assess the need then inventory his seed and determine if there is seed to meet the need. But everyone has seed.

People really get hung up on the subject of “the tithe”. But I’ve never met an Oak tree that was concerned about how many acorns it scattered. Was it 5%, 7% or 10%. Ridiculous, huh? So why would someone like us, especially someone who has received Eternal Life, be so stingy with what we have? Could it be we don’t understand His Grace or just how generous He is? Or, maybe we don’t trust Him to do what He promised?

Proverbs 3:9,10 (paraphrased) -“honor God by what you have, and what you get. Declare His value, His worth, to you through generosity. Do that, and He will make sure you will always have more than enough for any and every situation.”

The Spirit of Generosity is within each child of God. It’s up to them to recognize it, yield to it, and nurture it until it begins to grow. Tithing is a good discipline to help a person get started in living a life of generosity. But it is not an end in itself. In fact, a person could tithe and still not be generous.

Lives will be transformed, miracles will take place, through the lives of generous people. (see Acts 4)

Don’t go through life close-fisted. Close-fisted people are in no position to help or be helped.

Instead, emulate the character of your Heavenly Father, the One Who created us for generosity. Generously.

  • Rest and Contentment

    20130203-162624.jpg

    Rest and contentment.

There remains therefore a rest for the people of God (Hebrews 4:9 NKJV)

Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.“ So we may boldly say: “The LORD is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me”.(Hebrews 13:5 – 13:6 NKJV)

Now godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content (1 Timothy 6:6 – 6:8 NKJV)

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28 NKJV)

But those who wait on the LORD shall renew their strength… (Isaiah 40:31 NKJV)

Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for Him… (Psalm 37:7 NKJV)

…for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content. (Philippians 4:11 NKJV)

    Rest and contentment.
Really kind of hard to have one without the other.

    Rest and contentment.
Content to let the Master’s grace cover, empower, establish, provide, and defend.

    Rest and contentment.
A matter of trust, of total abandonment to “not my will, but Thine be done”.

    Rest and contentment.
Waiting and listening, ready to obey the Master’s next command.

    Rest and contentment.
For all those who live in the Master’s House.

    Rest and contentment.
Casting all of one’s cares upon the Master.

Sure, there are plenty of reasons to worry, to pace and fret. But those reasons are greatly diminished for the one who has rest and contentment.

    The Times They Are A-Changin’
    Lyrics by Bob Dylan

    Come gather ’round people
    Wherever you roam
    And admit that the waters
    Around you have grown
    And accept it that soon
You’ll be drenched to the bone.
    If your time to you
    Is worth savin’
    Then you better start swimmin’
Or you’ll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin’.

    Come writers and critics
    Who prophesize with your pen
    And keep your eyes wide
    The chance won’t come again
    And don’t speak too soon
For the wheel’s still in spin
    And there’s no tellin’ who
    That it’s namin’.
    For the loser now
    Will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin’.

    Come senators, congressmen
    Please heed the call
    Don’t stand in the doorway
    Don’t block up the hall
    For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
    There’s a battle outside
    And it is ragin’.
    It’ll soon shake your windows
    And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin’.

    Come mothers and fathers
    Throughout the land
    And don’t criticize
    What you can’t understand
    Your sons and your daughters
    Are beyond your command
    Your old road is
    Rapidly agin’.
Please get out of the new one
If you can’t lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin’.

    The line it is drawn
    The curse it is cast
    The slow one now
    Will later be fast
    As the present now
    Will later be past
    The order is
    Rapidly fadin’.
    And the first one now
    Will later be last
For the times they are a-changin

Words and music by Bob Dylan

The times they are a-changing. That’s a word The Lord keeps speaking to my heart. Changing times. Dividing times. Light getting brighter and darkness becoming darker. Gray areas turning lighter or darker, but not staying the same. The middle ground is diminishing. In or out. Up or down. Right or wrong. Heaven or Hell.

The times they are a-changing. Changing, becoming, turning to the final chapter of the Redemption Story. The Story of love and fellowship between God and man. The Story of how fellowship was broken, but love never was. The Story of love giving itself to redeem and restore the broken fellowship. God’s eternal purposes finally completed.

The times aren’t changing just because God wants to do something new. After all, it’s not new to Him. No, He’s just bringing things to a close, so He can then open all of Heaven and Eternity for His Redeemed and Restored Family.

  • Reverse the Cycle

    Cycle

“Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good. Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other. Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically. Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying. When God’s people are in need, be ready to help them. Always be eager to practice hospitality.

Bless those who persecute you. Don’t curse them; pray that God will bless them. Be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with each other. Don’t be too proud to enjoy the company of ordinary people. And don’t think you know it all! Never pay back evil with more evil. Do things in such a way that everyone can see you are honorable. Do all that you can to live in peace with everyone. Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God. For the Scriptures say,
“I will take revenge; I will pay them back,” says the Lord .

Instead, “If your enemies are hungry, feed them. If they are thirsty, give them something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals of shame on their heads.”

Don’t let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good.” (Romans 12:9-21 NLT)

Evil. Harmful. Wrong. Damaging. Injurious. Pernicious.

Life can be a vicious cycle, and can have a person running from issue to issue, crisis to crisis. I have known people, perhaps you have also, who aren’t “happy” unless they are fussing with someone, or not speaking with another; they seem to enjoy playing the victim. They carry on like they’ve been rejected by the last person on earth. Either someone has done them wrong, taken advantage of them, or they’ve been ignored completely. They show affection to loved ones but get mad when that affection isn’t reciprocated. They don’t know how to listen to someone’s pain or praise report; instead they feel the need to “one up them”. You know the ones. Your pain never is as bad as they’ve had. Blessings you’ve received never quite measure up to theirs. They can’t just say “thank you” for something you’ve done for them. No, they always have to pay you back, “get even”. They see themselves as real helpers, givers, lovers; but never recognize “giving” and “loving” with attached “strings” isn’t giving or loving at all. It’s “trading”; and with trading everything has to be even. Which means, someone may end up feeling cheated.

This kind of behavior isn’t cute, and it’s not just a nuisance. It is destructive to individuals, families, churches and the Kingdom of God. It is evil!

Evil. Harmful. Wrong. Damaging. Injurious. Pernicious.

We have a responsibility, a command, to NOT be overcome by evil, or evil ways. Instead, we are told to overcome evil with GOOD.

Okay, so what’s good? Where do we find the good to overcome evil?

Well, God is good, and His mercy endures forever! He has an abundance of good for whoever asks Him. “Every good and perfect gift comes from above”, and, “If anyone lacks wisdom, let him ask of God…”, James wrote. Wisdom to handle any temptation, any desire for revenge, any urge to curse and retaliate. So the first part in overcoming evil with good is ask God for help and wisdom. Help and wisdom is good. I’ll put it another way.

We must RECOGNIZE the temptation to jump back into the vicious cycle.

The next part can be as easy as it is difficult. What I mean is, it may be hard to get started but can become easy the more you do it.

REVERSE the cycle, is the second part. Doing the opposite of what you feel like doing! For instance, someone slighted you, offended you, treated you dirty. Instead of cursing them, bless them in the Name of Jesus. Instead of showing them hatred, show them love. Go out of your way to give into their life, with no strings attached, and no record-keeping of wrongs. REVERSE the cycle of evil reaction and evil manipulation. REVERSE the urge to get even. REVERSE the desire to control others. REVERSE the cycle and live free!

God never instructed us to love sin or hate good. We should ALWAYS hate what He hates and love what He loves. Let love be without hypocrisy. Work hard and serve God with enthusiasm. Be patient when trouble comes, and keep on praying. Be ready to help anyone with a need, and practice good hospitality. All that is fairly easy to do, until someone does us wrong!

That’s when it’s important for us to RECOGNIZE and REVERSE!

Persecuted? Don’t try to get even. Get God involved by asking God to bless them.

    REVERSE the cycle!

Has an “enemy” stolen from you, slandered you, embarrassed you? Invite them to dinner!

    REVERSE the cycle!

This is exactly what Jesus did, and it’s exactly what we need to do!

RECOGNIZE the temptation and REVERSE the cycle.

“Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Christ.” 1 John 5
