  • God IS Moving!

    20131018-220143.jpg

God IS moving throughout the world!

“But I haven’t seen Him do anything! He hasn’t moved for me!”

What if He moved in a way that we’d never witnessed? What if He told us things we’d never heard before? What if He actually smashed the religious boxes we have tried so desperately to keep Him in?

“After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

“Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew, Bethesda, having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of sick people, blind, lame, paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water. For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water; then whoever stepped in first, after the stirring of the water, was made well of whatever disease he had. Now a certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?” The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me.” Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your bed and walk.” (John 5:1-8 NKJV)

God has “moved” many times over the last several thousand years. He moved by His Spirit when He said, “Light be!” He moved in a new way when He captured Enoch, and “took him” to Heaven. He’d never moved like He moved with Noah, the Ark, and the Flood; and He won’t move that way again.

When He approached Abram, giving him instructions, a covenant, a promise, and a name change, no one had ever witnessed such a thing!

Down through the ages God has moved and stirred people, stones, water, and Heaven itself, to accomplish His plans and purposes. Joshua, Elijah, Samson, Daniel, and many others have all witnessed “new moves” of God.

Finally, He moved through the obedience of young teenage girl, a virgin named Mary. A brand new move of God; unlike any other, ever! When the Angel told Mary she was going to give birth to the Son of God, her response was as to be suspected; “How can this be, since I do not know a man?”

“And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God. “Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren. “For with God nothing will be impossible.” Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.” (Luke 1:34-38 NKJV)

And even though God’s final word to mankind is His Son, Jesus (“God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds;” – Hebrews 1:1-2 NKJV), He is STILL doing new things and moving in new ways; all through His Son and the authority in His Name!

Here’s where the lame man by the Pool of Bethesda enters the story. Imagine, if you can, Jesus (God’s “new move” and “new stirring”) as He walked up to the old Sheep Gate. As He stepped through the arched, stone entrance, He scanned the pool area, looking for a certain individual.

There were many people in the area, most of whom were sick, blind, lame, and paralyzed. The power of God could’ve healed every one, but Jesus was focused; His heart was fixed, His direction from Father, clear. He had to find a certain paralyzed man.

There, just past the little widow woman on the left; he must be the one. Jesus walked past everyone else, and as He approached the crippled man, He said, “Do you want to be made well?”

Until now, the only “move” the lame man was aware of was the “Angel stirring the water” move. It was the latest thing in town. And though there were some religious leaders who cried “fake” at their testimonies, and made sure their congregations were told to “stay away from those Bethesda Pool fanatics”, people were really changed and healed as God moved His way at the pool.

But Jesus came along and asked the question, “Do you want to be made well?”

What kind of question is that?! Didn’t Jesus understand how God moved? Wasn’t He aware of the manner in which God healed people? Surely He knew that not everyone could be healed. It just wasn’t the way God ministered to people anymore!

I’m sure the lame man was perplexed, to say the least. I mean, for someone to walk all that way, past the other sick folk, and see him with his bone size legs; then ask such a ridiculous question! Indeed!

Today, some 2000 years later, people are exactly like the lame man at the pool. They haven’t changed a bit. There have been a number of different “moves” through the years; from the move on the Day of Pentecost, right on down through the various moves in the twentieth century. But we still have a hard time embracing a new move of God.

But what if we took a moment and, before we debunk the new move as heretical, look and see if Jesus is involved in it; and if so, in what way? Though we may not understand the new move, we can trust Jesus! We may feel as though the new thing is ridiculous and anti-God; but even the lame man had sense to obey Jesus’ word, take up his bed, and walk!

People cry out against the faith movement, the shepherding movement, the laughter movement, and even the movement movement (just kidding). But maybe, just maybe, Jesus is somewhere close by.

Excesses, quite possible. Charlatans, could be some. But you can have those, even without a new move. In fact, you don’t need a new move, old move, or ANY move to locate a bunch of weirdos! The world is full of them!

My concern is that we become so comfortable in how “our” water is stirred, or in how God moves in our group, we ignore something new that He wants to do.

God IS moving! And He’ll move for and through those who will move with Him. And though He’ll never violate His Word, it IS true: “We walk by faith, not by sight.” The lame man embraced the words of Jesus even though they sounded strange. In doing so, he embraced the thing God was doing and received the strength he needed to move with God.

May that be our testimony, now, and in the days and months to come.

  • The Dreaded Children of God

20131017-212528.jpgI feel like I’ve missed something important.

    I mean REAL important.

I’ve been a Christian, a born-again child of God, for 38 years. I’ve been a minister, preacher, pastor for 30 years. But I still feel like I’ve missed something important.

    REAL important!

I’ve witnessed God minister in outstanding ways to men and women, boys and girls. Testimonies of broken marriages completely restored by God are common. Yet…

I feel like the Lord is showing me something I should have understood years ago; “the dreaded children of God.”

For example, when God had the children of Israel moving from Egypt to the Promised Land, He made a powerful promise to His children:

“But if you indeed obey His (My Angel’s) voice and do all that I speak, then I will be an enemy to your enemies and an adversary to your adversaries.

“For My Angel will go before you and bring you in to the Amorites and the Hittites and the Perizzites and the Canaanites and the Hivites and the Jebusites; and I will cut them off. “You shall not bow down to their gods, nor serve them, nor do according to their works; but you shall utterly overthrow them and completely break down their sacred pillars. “So you shall serve the LORD your God, and He will bless your bread and your water. And I will take sickness away from the midst of you. “No one shall suffer miscarriage or be barren in your land; I will fulfill the number of your days. “I will send My fear before you, I will cause confusion among all the people to whom you come, and will make all your enemies turn their backs to you.” (Exodus 23:22-27 NKJV)

Right before Joshua took the city of Jericho, Rahab testified that she and her people feared the “dreaded children of God.”

“I know that the LORD has given you the land, that the terror of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land are fainthearted because of you. “For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were on the other side of the Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom you utterly destroyed. “And as soon as we heard these things, our hearts melted; neither did there remain any more courage in anyone because of you, for the LORD your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath.” (Joshua 2:8 – 2:11 NKJV)

“The terror of you…the inhabitants of the land are fainthearted because of you…neither did there remain any more courage in anyone because of you…”.

See what I think I’ve been missing?

Moses reminded the children of God just what was expected of them, and what they could expect from God.

“This day I will begin to put the dread and fear of you upon the nations under the whole heaven, who shall hear the report of you, and shall tremble and be in anguish because of you.” (Deuteronomy 2:25 NKJV)

“No man shall be able to stand against you; the LORD your God will put the dread of you and the fear of you upon all the land where you tread, just as He has said to you.” (Deuteronomy 11:25 NKJV)

If I’m seeing this correctly, every time the children of God were to take new territory or possess the land He’d already promised, they never were to go out alone. The DREAD and FEAR of God would go before them; thus ensuring certain and complete victory.

Even in the days following the day of Pentecost, and the subsequent persecution of the church, the dreaded children of God were causing an uproar in Jerusalem and surrounding regions.

“So great fear came upon all the church and upon all who heard these things…Yet none of the rest dared join them, but the people esteemed them highly.” (Acts 5:11,13 NKJV)

Okay. So what am I saying? Am I saying I think people should be scared of us because we’re children of God?

    No, I’m not.

But I do believe the spiritual forces which are affecting the lives of people SHOULD recognize the dreaded children of God are in the area; and their presence means God’s in the neighborhood!

It was that way for Jesus!

I know! We’re not Jesus. But if we wear His armor, speak and obey His word, and demonstrate His love…how will the devil know the difference?

People are living in darkness…dreaded children of God, YOU are the light of the world.

People are full of confusion and fear…dreaded children of God, YOU have the wisdom and love of God to share with them.

The enemy has no defense for the dreaded children of God who have settled in their hearts ONE GREAT TRUTH: JESUS CHRIST IS LORD, and has the first and final say in their life!

Note: “the dread” and “fear” of God didn’t fill the tabernacle or the temple. The Glory did, but not the “dread”. That happened when His people were following His MOVEMENT, and they were moving in accordance with the Cloud; the Spirit of God. As they were possessing their possessions, God was “melting” any resistance which was ahead. As the new believers preached Jesus to their world, God’s “dread” brought the people to their knees.

I sincerely and passionately believe it’s time for the DREADED CHILDREN OF GOD to rise up in one accord, and shake their world as the early church shook theirs!

Instead of the church being shaken by the world’s forces, let’s trust and obey God, and do some shaking of our own!

  • The “Tingler”-Spirit of Fear

20131016-230552.jpgAs a kid, I saw some scary movies. Haunted Palace, a 1963 movie, is one I saw at a theater when it was first released. I was not quite 9 years old, and even though I spent half the time huddled behind the seat in front of me, it scared the bejeebers out of me. Haven’t had a bejeeber since that day!

When I was about 16, I saw The Tingler on TV. The 1959 horror-thriller was probably the most effective of any movie in raising fear to its greatest heights in me.

The Tingler – spirit of fear!

According to the movie, each person has a parasite living in their spine that feeds on fear. When the person is afraid, the “Tingler” (as it is called), grows and curls the spine until it eventually kills the person. The only way to overcome it and keep it harmless is by screaming. Wild movie. I had nightmares for days after seeing that one.

I have no clue as to what the horror flicks of today are like; haven’t seen one in years.

    Why?

    Jesus!

    Huh?

I’ll ask a question to help me illustrate my point.

If you were trapped in a completely dark room, absolutely pitch black, how would you feel? Add to that, while in that room, though you can’t even see your hand in front of your face, you know you aren’t alone; you can feel wet, slimy creatures crawling over your feet.

    How would you feel?

All of a sudden the room is flooded with light, the creatures retreat to the corner as they search for a shadow to hide in, and the door of freedom swings wide open, offering you the release from captivity!

    How would you feel?

Would you say a heart-felt thanks to your rescuer, and then walk back into the room, shut the door and turn off the lights? Would you silently wait while the creatures slithered back into the open and start their scary routine?

There was a time in my life when I was without hope; without God in my life. That is also when I was without faith; and when the spirit of fear dominated my soul.

“that at that time you were without Christ…having no hope and without God in the world.” (Ephesians 2:12 NKJV)

But when I received Jesus as my Lord and Savior, He gave me faith and removed the spirit of fear!

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV)

So, why would I want to feed the spirit of fear? Why would I want to invite fear back into my life?

Fear has torment. It feeds on doubt and worry, borrowing troublesome thoughts from the enemy Jesus came to destroy!

Fear paralyzes! It causes such turmoil in the believer’s heart that they can lose their will to stand in faith and resist the devil.

Fear is an enemy to faith in God. It tries to replace faith, operating basically the same as faith. “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” So is fear! Fear is convinced something bad will happen; its evidence is what its five senses are telling it.

With faith it is possible to please God, for one can believe God is, and that He rewards those who diligently seek Him. Not so with fear. Fear believes the problem, the situation, and the enemy is greater than God.

The devil receives “back-handed” worship through our fear!

Abraham was strong in faith, and was fully persuaded that what God had promised, He was able to perform.

But the person strong in fear will be fully persuaded that what the enemy whispers in their ear will come to pass.

Like Elijah. Elijah was fully persuaded that what Jezebel had promised, she was able to perform.

Fear speaks of the unknown, like it is known.
Yesterday, today, and tomorrow; fear is convinced trouble is inevitable.
Not enough or too much, fear reasons.
What some will say, or won’t say; fear holds things close to the heart.

Frightening situations will provide either a revelation of God’s Presence and Power, or they’ll reinforce the shackles holding the heart in fear.

What you allow your eyes to see, ears to hear, and heart to meditate upon, will determine whether you walk in faith or stumble along in fear.

Halloween is coming soon. What a huge “holiday” it’s become! Many people, including believers, will dress up in ghoulish costumes and celebrate the spirit of fear and darkness without even realizing it. What a shame!

Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil. Fear is of the devil.

The law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus has made us free from the law of sin and death. Faith is attached to the Spirit of Life; fear is packaged with the law of sin and death.

Light has no communion with darkness, nor does righteousness comingle with unrighteousness. Faith and fear do not cohabit.

Since we have NOT been given the spirit of fear, how about you and I getting to know the God of Life better, rather than spending time and money feeding the fear Jesus came to destroy!

The “Tingler” will have no control over the person who is God-filled; filled with power, love, and self-disciplined mind.

  • Bucket List

    20131014-204430.jpg

Almost every day I hear someone talk about their “bucket list”. Do you have a bucket list?

People have bucket lists for all sorts of things they want; to have, to eat, to buy, to do, and places they’d like to visit. I’ve got a few things in my bucket, as well.

What if you could have anything and everything you wanted, when you wanted it?

Wouldn’t that be a glorious life? Or would it?

It’s great to dream! But I’ve known people who refuse to be happy unless they always get what they want, or have their own way.

Are you that kind of person?

Okay, so you know what you want, your bucket list is full; but do you REALLY know what’s good for you?

“Oh, if I could just win the Lottery!” Would that make your life glorious?

Who really has the perspective and wisdom to know what one “needs”, other than God?

“Your Heavenly Father knows what you have need of, before you ask.” Matthew 6

I’m convinced that the biggest problem, the greatest sin, is not drinking alcohol, viewing pornography, gluttony, cussing, skipping church, or spitting on the sidewalk! No, there’s something much more prevalent and deadly.

Discontentment. Always wanting, “needing”, something more than we have, in order to make us happy and content.

Discontentment actually is a slap in God’s face! It declares to the One Who loves us and promises to us His everlasting care, “You aren’t living up to Your Word! You are not satisfying all my cravings! You aren’t enough for me!”

Discontentment robs us of joy, faith, love, peace, meekness, etc. Discontentment continually hacks at the roots of the Fruit of the Spirit “tree”; and will eventually bring it down.

Bucket lists are worthless to those who haven’t learned to be content.

Do you remember the older style of minnow buckets? They were made out of metal, and consisted of 2 parts; the inner part with holes allowing water in and out, and the solid outer part, which kept the water in when transporting the minnows.

No matter how hard a person tried to get all the minnows out of the bucket, invariably one or two would remain hidden in it. Hidden until a day or two later; then the smell of rotting minnows seemed to contaminate everything within 20 feet! I mention the minnow bucket because the discontented person is kind of like that old bucket. They don’t know what they really have until it begins to rot.

Malcontents and ungrateful people have rotten attitudes and stinky dispositions. I’d rather smell rotten minnows than have to be around those who are never satisfied or thankful.

The next time you hear someone talk about a bucket list, take a moment and thank God for all you have. Remind yourself, like David did, of all the Lord’s benefits and blessings.

And be content with what you have.

“Don’t love money; be satisfied with what you have. For God has said, “I will never fail you. I will never abandon you.” So we can say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me.” (Hebrews 13:5 – 13:6 NLT)

Be content, or you may wind up smelling like a rotten minnow decaying under the lid of an old minnow bucket.

  • It Seemed Good

    20131013-212125.jpg

Some things really seem good, know what I mean?

But have you ever made a decision based on what “seemed good” then found out it wasn’t good? I have. I would bet you have, as well.

Adam and Eve looked at the tree, listened to the serpent, and acted on what seemed good. But it was SO bad!

It seemed good to King David, when he called for Bathsheba, Uriah’s wife, to come and keep him company. But, again, it was bad.

It seemed good to Saul of Tarsus to persecute Christians; he believed he was honoring God by his actions. Good in his eyes, but bad in God’s!

Everyone has the potential to make bad choices. Even what seems good can be dangerously bad.

    Unless we hear from God.

    Yes, God.

To those who will commit their lives to Him, allowing Him to have the final say in the decisions they must make, He, by His Spirit, has a precious way of letting them know that what seems good, is good! Some people call it hearing from God, receiving a witness, or getting God’s green light. I simply say, “it seems good to me AND the Holy Spirit!”

    Hallelujah.

“For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us…” (Acts 15:28 NLT)

God is the One Who knows what is good or bad. Good looking fruit hanging from a forbidden tree still means bad fruit. Power and authority to do as one pleases doesn’t necessarily guarantee good ideas or decisions. Passion isn’t the litmus test for whether an action is right or wrong. Someone can believe something so strongly, so passionately; but passionately bad, passionately wrong, is still not good.

For something to seem good AND BE good, we MUST find out what God thinks about it. If it seems good to Him, don’t be afraid to step out in faith.

If it doesn’t, find something else to do.

  • Handwriting on the Wall

    20131010-213919.jpg

The handwriting is on the wall.

And the hand that wrote, “mene, mene, tekel, upharsin”, is the same hand that has drawn a line in the sand of our society.

God had a message for the Babylonian King Belshazzar (Daniel, chapter 5). As the prophet of God interpreted the Divine word, the king was left with no doubt to its meaning. But did it bother him? No! Instead of repenting, he proudly told Daniel about the great position he was promoting him to. The king missed the point completely! The handwriting didn’t change the king, so instead, it testified against him.

Belshazzar had witnessed examples of humility in the past; even his grandfather Nebuchadnezzar humbled himself and acknowledged the Most High God as the Ultimate Ruler. He knew of godly men; men such as Daniel. He had ample time to turn from his wicked ways and to humble himself before the Mighty God of Israel. But he was above such acts of contrition. He was so full of himself, there was only one thing that could conquer his ugly pride; and that was death.

He wouldn’t listen to the prophet; he refused to acknowledge his arrogant pride, so God let the king’s hourglass run out of sand.

Now a line has been drawn in our society’s sandy foundation! God is saying to this nation, “enough is enough!”

The line represents the end of His “tolerance.”

You may say, “But I thought God was slow to anger, and not willing that anyone perish”.

He IS slow to anger. He IS NOT willing that anyone perish. But what else can He do?

America must repent of its pride and arrogance. God RESISTS (fights against) the proud, but comes to the aid of the humble.

American political and civic leaders, from President Barak Obama to the mayor of Hicksville, USA; you must humble yourselves before God. Humility before fellow Americans is a good place to begin.

American spiritual leaders, whether a mighty Apostle who carries a Divine “touch”, or the pastor of a church with only two people; you ALL must recognize the line in the sand.

This society has become intoxicated with self! As Belshazzar shamelessly used the vessels of gold, which were once dedicated to the work of God, to feed the immoral cravings of himself and his guests, so America shamelessly mocks God, His people, His work, and His institution, the church. This society is consumed with eliminating all traces, even the minutest sign, of God.

Many churches have fallen prey to the spirit of the age; re-create God into the image of fallen, sinful man. Market God as One Who cares for people, but doesn’t care what they do or believe. Anything goes with a loving God. But that lie will soon require payment in full. The wages of sin is death. Period. And it is not negotiable.

Yes, the line has been drawn by the finger of God. See it in the sand; the sand America has chosen to use as its societal foundation. They hear the words of Jesus, along with the leaders of other religions, and mix them all together. For diversity’s sake, of course. Then, they choose the parts of each religion they like, understand, are more comfortable with, and throw the rest away.

And then they wonder why their life, and their nation, is falling apart!

The line has been drawn. Belshazzar, will you heed the warning? Merry men and women intoxicated with power and pride, will you acknowledge your inadequacies and bankrupt morals? Will you realize, before it’s too late, there’s only one way for this nation, this society, to recover?

Americans of all backgrounds, ethnicities, and race: your hope doesn’t depend on who wins an election, or who has the majority in Congress.

Continue to step up to the line and challenge God if you’d like. But don’t be deceived. God is not mocked. Nor will He compromise His character and integrity because someone said He isn’t real.

Wake up America. Put down the cup, Belshazzar. Rend your heart, oh merry ones, and not your garments.

The handwriting’s on the wall; a line’s been drawn in the sand.

The Finger of God has written, “It’s time.”

“And you his (Nebuchadnezzar’s) [grand]son, Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart, though you knew all this, but you have lifted up yourself against the Lord of heaven. And the vessels of his house have been brought in before you, and you and your lords, your wives, and your concubines have drunk wine from them. And you have praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood, and stone, which do not see or hear or know, but the God in whose hand is your breath, and whose are all your ways, you have not honored.

“Then from his presence the hand was sent, and this writing was inscribed. And this is the writing that was inscribed: Mene, Mene, Tekel, and Parsin. This is the interpretation of the matter: Mene, God has numbered the days of your kingdom and brought it to an end; Tekel, you have been weighed in the balances and found wanting; Peres, your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians…

“That very night Belshazzar the Chaldean king was killed…” (Daniel 5:22-31 ESV)

  • Lord of the Flies

20131007-210521.jpgIsn’t it funny how some thoughts seem to hang around for days without you knowing why? Well, here’s something that’s been buzzing around my head for a bit.

When’s the last time you thought about flies? You know, those pesky little critters with wings and big eyes. The ones that always have to fly in front of your face, instead of staying on the far side of the room. The nasty things that are attracted to stink and rot! Yuck!

Have you thought any lately about The Lord of the Flies? Remember that old movie? When I was in seventh grade our class had to watch the 1963 version of the film.

It definitely was a strange movie!

Its storyline went something like this: during WWII, a group of young British boys were shipwrecked on an uninhabited island, without any surviving adults. They had to figure out how to survive until they could be rescued. Some of the boys felt they should establish laws to govern their new civilization, build homes, and work for the betterment of all. Others, however, decided that playing, hunting, and living without rules was what they wanted to do. So there became a split in leadership, and opposing factions were formed. Eventually, and before they could be rescued, the lawless became the hunters and hunted the other group; even to the point of murder.

The “lord of the flies” was symbolized by a wild boar’s head, placed on top of a bloody pole, with swarms of flies covering it completely, inside and out. Nice mental image, eh?

Basically, the author of the book, William Golding, was trying to say that people, left to themselves, will not get better; only worse.

I believe I see his point.

But let’s look at a different “lord of the flies” story; one from the Bible.

“One day Israel’s new king, Ahaziah, fell through the latticework of an upper room at his palace in Samaria and was seriously injured. So he sent messengers to the temple of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron, to ask whether he would recover. But the angel of the Lord told Elijah, who was from Tishbe, “Go and confront the messengers of the king of Samaria and ask them, ‘Is there no God in Israel? Why are you going to Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron, to ask whether the king will recover? Now, therefore, this is what the Lord says: You will never leave the bed you are lying on; you will surely die.’” So Elijah went to deliver the message.” (2 Kings 1:2-4 NLT)

The city of Ekron, located about 20 miles west of Jerusalem, had their own special “god” to worship: baal-zebub, which means “lord of the fly”. Seems kind of stupid, doesn’t it? I mean, worship the god of flies? Maybe their god WAS a fly. I’m not sure, but either way, it sure doesn’t make sense.

The king of Israel was in a very bad condition. He felt as though he was dying, and he was right. So he sent his messengers to the “Fly God” to find out if he’d recover or not. (The king was trying to get the latest “buzz” on the matter-ha!) Sounds wild!

The prophet Elijah was sent by Jehovah God (the fly’s Creator) to the king’s messengers with a special word; in question form. Again, wild!

Imagine the knuckleheads who would actually seek wisdom from a Fly God! Of course, that happened somewhere around 2500 – 2800 years ago. People were a lot more stupid, more gullible, then anyone today! We’d NEVER try and talk with a fly (unless we missed a few times), or worship a Fly God!

No, we’d rather try and seek wisdom and direction from more reliable sources. Today, our society prefers to listen to whoever Oprah touts as great. Or, we may rather read the section of paper which carries the syndicated horoscope column. You know, find out what you need to know from some “nearby” planet or star!

Fortune cookies “work” for some, while others are beholden to whatever “cosmic revelation” they receive while flitting around the universe in their “mind capsule”. I’ll say it again; WILD!

The Lord’s question to the king is relevant to us today. “Why are you going to everyone and everything else for the answer you need? Why not come to Me?”

I may be wrong, but I believe the reason the king DIDN’T ask the God of Israel for an answer is because he knew he would have to change his evil, selfish, rebellious ways.

You see, flies really don’t care what you believe, what you say, what you look at on the internet, who you “sleep” with, or what you put into your body or spend your money on. Flies just don’t care about anything but food, stink, and other flies.

And that goes for OUR “replacement god’s”, as well.

If you’ve been having more conversations with flies, the television, or the horoscope columnist than with God, maybe it’s time someone asked you the question Elijah had for the king.

    “Why the Fly God?”

  • Brilliant Man?

20131006-230713.jpgKnowledge, inventions, scientific discoveries; these all seem to be increasing. Multiplying! Wouldn’t you agree that there are a lot of brilliant people in this world?

Just think of all the inventions within the last 60 years!

Since I’ve been on this earth, the world has seen some awesome things “invented”. For instance:

1955 TV Remote Control and the Polio Vaccine
    1957 Birth Control Pill
1958 First Successful Commerical Jet Airliner Debuted
1960 Bar Codes First Used Commercially
1961 First Cordless Tool Released (Black and Decker)
1962 LED Invented by Nick Holonyak
    1969 Smoke Detector
    1970 ATM Machine
1973 First Cell Phone and MRI First Used for Medical Purposes
    1978 GPS Launched
    1980 First Online Shopping
    1981 First Laptop Computer
    1984 DNA Fingerprinting Technique Invented
    1985 First Robotic Biopsies
    1987 Prozac Invented
    1992 Color Plasma Display Invented
1994 First Stents Approved for Use
    1997 Toyota Pruis Released
    1998 MP3 Player Invented
    2001 iPod Released
    2005 YouTube Launched
    2007 iPhone released
2010 iPad Released First iPad released.

This is just a sample of man’s accomplishments over the last 60 years. The list would be much greater if I included all the space exploration inventions, military weapons technology, computer upgrades, and science/health related improvements.

Man has accomplished SO much; and I’m really glad, because I thoroughly enjoy my smartphone!

Some would even say that man can do anything he sets his mind to.

    “Knowledge is Power!”

Now this may come as a shock to you, but man wouldn’t have had a clue to any of the discoveries listed if God hadn’t given him the desire, and the wisdom, to seek things out!

    “Oh, no! You mentioned God!”

    Yep!

I really pity the fool (Psalm 14:1) who will not believe in a Creator God, who thinks all this complex universe just “happened” to begin at some point eons and eons ago, but will celebrate man’s cunning and uncanny ability to invent such marvelous things! As if man is God!

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out even a rocket scientist couldn’t create what mankind has spent thousands of years studying; i.e. the heavens and the earth. You see, even with man’s brilliance, he’s no match for Almighty God! Man discovers only what God allows him to discover.

“The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.” (Deuteronomy 29:29 ESV)

When God created the heavens and the earth, He established every law of science KNOWN to man, AND those UNKNOWN. Electricity, computer science (mathematics), gravity, flight, etc, all were created by God to be discovered by man. All of God’s creation point to its Creator, and those who will listen to creation’s song will hear everything that breathes, and lives, praising God for His great and awesome works! Everything except God’s best; we can be too brilliant.

Mankind wants to try and live without the Source of Life. They want to shine without the Source of Light. They desire to be wise in their own eyes, and because of that, they’ll never witness the greatest “secrets” of all.

For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.” Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?” “For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.” (1 Corinthians 1:19, 20, 25 ESV)

If mankind would stop for just a moment and acknowledge God as the Designer/Creator of all things seen and unseen, it would be an easy step for them to agree all things were created FOR Him.

“For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities – all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” (Colossians 1:16-17 ESV)

If all things were created FOR Him, that means every “discovered” (uncovered) thing, law, principle, or equation has a God-given purpose!

One simple example is the internet and wireless technology. Man didn’t invent the technology any more than Al Gore invented the internet. God established the laws and principles and opened the minds of certain people to discover them. I realize I sound like I’m robbing man of a lot of credit; but think how God must feel at times!

But the technology was never intended to be used for evil; only good! Though people have used the internet for all kinds of wickedness, God still owns the rights for its usage; a tool for declaring to the nations the Glory of God!

The Word of God teaches there’ll be a day when knowledge will increase at an exponential rate! I believe that day is here. The Bible also seems to indicate that at the same time, stress and peril will increase; especially among Christ followers. Persecution and tribulation will increase, as well. Mankind has been duped by the devil to believe he, man, is the center of the universe and the creator of life. So, whenever man’s “deity” and wisdom is challenged, of course there’s going to be a battle.

The “battle” is not our call. Our call; God’s call for ALL MANKIND, the brilliant and the dim, is to KNOW HIM AND MAKE HIM KNOWN. Using the discoveries He’s allowed someone to find (or invent), let’s use them to declare to the nations the Glory of God, and the good news that Jesus Christ is Lord!

Mankind may be brilliant, but God is the source of his light!

  • Bridge Boy

    OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Have you ever known someone who had tons of great ideas, yet they were only great to the one who thought of them? If so, you probably knew me when I was between the ages of 15 and 18.

One of my greatest ideas, some would say my “signature idea”, was my idea to live under a bridge. Keep in mind this was before much attention was given to the “homeless”. Actually, I wasn’t thinking of myself as homeless; my bridge was my home. But more on that later.

I really wasn’t A LOT different than others my age; it’s just that I was missing some sort of filter to keep me from acting on my ideas before they could be thoroughly scrutinized.

“Scrutinized? Hey, there’s plenty of time for that!” At least, that was what I thought. Shucks, when I felt the need or desire to “get away from it all”, I didn’t stop to think twice. I packed my parachute bag with all of my worldly possessions (you know, record albums, favorite jeans and t-shirts, stuff like that), grabbed a piece of cardboard to use as a sign, and wrote the word “WEST” on it. When I arrived at the Interstate entrance ramp, I’d heist a road reflector by breaking it off its pole. I’d then keep it to use when it got dark. I think I got more rides at night using the “reflector method”; people would look and see some long-haired, skinny kid waving a reflector and feel sorry. It was one idea that worked.

I don’t remember how many times I hitchhiked to Colorado. I do know that I never had more than $5 to my name when I did. Poor planning? Nope. NO planning. But, again, why plan? Why scrutinize a plan? Either it will work or it won’t. The way I figured, even if my idea failed, I would be in a better situation than I was in previously. So, I’d pack up the bag, grab the sign, and hit the road; Colorado, here I come!

I met my wife, Phyllis, in Colorado, but I’ll talk about that a little later.

I’ve hitchhiked to Illinois, Missouri, Colorado and school. My reason for hitchhiking to school was a no-brainer, as far as I could tell. I’d save my bus fare by getting a free ride from some friendly driver. Who cared if I was late for school; I’d be skipping at least one class anyway. And my bus fare went a long way toward renting a pool table for a half hour.

Okay, fast forward to March, 1972. Seventeen years old, living in Colorado, and working on a dairy farm. How I ended up moving to Colorado began as another one of my impulsive ideas. But that’s another story.

March, 1972. I had been working on a dairy farm for room and board, plus $25 a week. I fairly enjoyed it, except I was rarely paid. Phyllis and I had met a few months earlier, and planned to get married after she graduated in the Spring, so I was pretty disturbed about not getting paid.

You may have picked up on this by now: I was full of ideas, but very impulsive, and quite unwise. First, how could I even think I could support 2 people on $25 a week? Second, would we live in the same house with the ranch owners? And third, if I didn’t even get the pay owed to me, how could I even think about getting married?

My way of coping with stressful situations was to pick up and run. I had practiced running away from everything stressful (home life, school, individuals) for so long, it had become my immediate response to trouble. So, I quit my job and decided to begin a new career. As for a place to stay, there was a bridge located on Highway 94, east of Colorado Springs about 10 miles. It would be a perfect place for me to live. Under the bridge was plenty of space for me to set up camp, and it was just down the road from Phyllis’ house. (my “home” is pictured above)

I didn’t know what I would do for money, but first things first.

That’s how my mind worked. Live under a bridge, hitch hike into town each day, find a job, save some money, get married, buy a “bread truck”, travel around the country writing songs and playing concerts…

Dream, dream, dream. Ideas, ideas, ideas.

But my great, impulsive idea of living under the bridge was short lived. Someone told the town “mayor” (chief busy-body, store owner, and bus driver) of my plans. So, as I was unpacking my things and straightening up my new home, the mayor and a deputy sheriff arrived. I was taken to a juvenile detention center, then put on a bus taking me back to Des Moines.

But a week later, ta-da! No bridge, this time, but a city park picnic table, and a “hippy crash pad” in Colorado Springs.

    Fast forward 35 years.

By this time Phyllis and I had been married about 35 years. A lot of things had happened: Born again, 4 years in the Army (3 years in Germany), one son (Jeremy), an ordained minister, and had finally found a filter to use helping me deal with my impulsiveness.

Phyllis and I flew to Colorado in 2007 to attend her high school reunion, number 35. While we were there, we drove by her old house and my bridge, and also to see an old neighbor of hers (an friend of the family).

We pulled into the neighbor’s drive and saw her preparing for a garage sale. As we stepped out of the car, Phyllis introduced herself (it had been 35 years), and then told the lady my name. She looked at me, grinned real big, and said,

    “Oh! You’re Bridge Boy!”

We laughed and laughed! To think she’d remember my “great idea” after all that time.

I believe everyone has a story to tell, and there’s a lesson to be learned within each story. Here are a couple of things to glean from my story:

    1. A person may seem like they’ll never change, never become more than a wandering bum, never learn responsibility or how to deal with pressure.  But with God, all things are possible.

    2. God can have His hand on your loved ones without you realizing it.

    3. Just because a kid has a lot of stupid, impractical ideas doesn’t mean all their ideas are dumb!

    4. People should be given an opportunity and time to grow up.

    5. Sometimes it’s okay to dream dreams bigger than life. God is bigger than life!

    6. The path some folks are on may look fairly dark. But just keep looking to God; He’s just waiting down the road a ways to introduce Himself to the wanderer.

    7. Don’t give up on impulsive goofs, dreamers who seem to live in the clouds, or under a bridge. God is still able to change the lives of some of the nuttiest people.

I know, because I have experienced it!

How about you? Do you have any “Bridge Boy” stories? I’d live to hear them.

  • Appreciate Your Pastor

    20131001-214843.jpg

Disclaimer: This post is not about my wife and I. Though we have pastored a couple of churches in the past, we are not pastoring now. However, we do know what it’s like; the joys, the sorrows, the pressures, the emotions and spiritual battles involved with one of the most important ministries in the Kingdom of God.

“He will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will carry the lambs in his arms, holding them close to his heart. He will gently lead the mother sheep with their young.” (Isaiah 40:11 NLT)

Everyone needs a pastor. Yes, everyone.

You’ve probably heard someone refer to Jesus as the Good Shepherd. He carries His lambs in His arms, HOLDING THEM CLOSE TO HIS HEART. This is also how His “under” shepherds, His pastors, minister to the church.

Of course, there are some pastors who don’t seem to measure up. Maybe they could use some assistance from people like you and I.

I remember years ago, when I was cultivating my “preacher’s itch”, our pastor, whom we dearly loved, resigned from the church. We were heart broken. The church was small, the pastor worked outside the church to take care of his family, PLUS cleaned the church early Sunday mornings.

I know he cared for us. But I didn’t think he needed cared for. I remember arriving at church early on Sundays, seeing the pastor vacuuming the hallway, and instead of finishing the job for him so he could rest before preaching, I’d tell him all about my latest “revelation” while he continued working. And when he told the church he was resigning, I offered to help teach a class or two instead of volunteering to clean toilets.

    I was terribly immature!

But I didn’t realize it until after we lost a great man of God! (I did clean the church for the next pastor)

October is Pastor Appreciation Month. Show your pastors you REALLY care for them. Pray for them, take them out for a nice meal; better yet, give them a gift card to a nice, quiet restaurant and offer to babysit their kids.

Carry them close to your heart by praying for them, shutting down gossip about them when you hear it. Be regular in church attendance and give your tithes and offerings like you know you should.

You say you love your pastor(s)? Don’t love them in word only, but in deed and truth; just like you want to be loved.

God has them watching out for you and I; let’s do our part and watch out for them.

Here’s an idea from Paul. “Finally, dear brothers and sisters, we ask you to pray for us. Pray that the Lord’s message will spread rapidly and be honored wherever it goes, just as when it came to you. Pray, too, that we will be rescued from wicked and evil people, for not everyone is a believer.” (2 Thessalonians 3:1-2 NLT)
