The Pattern

IMG_4226

This line of thought all began as I wondered about animals in heaven. And don’t try to get me to believe you’ve never thought about it. I know better.

I am convinced that earth was a copy of heaven. Originally. Heaven was the blueprint God used to create all we see (and can’t see).

Do you remember this part of the Lord’s Prayer, “Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven”? Sure you do.

So I figure there are dogs and cats, birds and bees, in the beautiful land called heaven.

I still refuse to believe there are spiders, snakes, or bats, though.

Anyway, the word “pattern” stuck in my mind.

Pattern.

It’s more than the instructions God gave to Moses. For one thing, the tent of meeting wasn’t just a place where the Israelites, the “called out ones”, could have a place to do church. It was a picture of God’s redemptive story and a powerful portrait of the Redeemer, Jesus the son of God. It was the pre-Calvary place where God and man could meet for fellowship.

“And let them make me a sanctuary, that I may dwell in their midst. Exactly as I show you concerning the pattern of the tabernacle, and of all its furniture, so you shall make it.” (Exodus 25:8-9 ESV)

“And see that you make them after the pattern for them, which is being shown you on the mountain.” (Exodus 25:40 ESV)

“And this was the workmanship of the lampstand, hammered work of gold. From its base to its flowers, it was hammered work; according to the pattern that the Lord had shown Moses, so he made the lampstand.” (Numbers 8:4 ESV)

The pattern signifies the right way, God’s way, of doing something. Whether in ministry, family life, or on the job. It reveals the way we should treat others, entertain ourselves, and even leave this life for the next.

“Follow the pattern of the sound words that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.” (2 Timothy 1:13 ESV)

We’re admonished, as Moses was, to do everything according to the pattern. Notice another word from Paul:

“And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” (Colossians 3:17 ESV)

You see, when Jesus instructed us to pray, “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven…”, it wasn’t an exercise in futility. God doesn’t give busywork.

It was a pattern.

It IS THE pattern. Whatever’s in heaven, let it be on earth.

It’s how things on earth are changed. It’s the way healing prevails over sickness. It’s how life conquers death. Man becomes a new creation in Christ, through faith in the pattern.

And it’s how the new, recreated child of God, is to live. Just like the pattern.

Jesus.

How can the pattern change your world? Care to discuss it?

Why? When? And A Few Other Questions.

20140205-224103.jpg

Have you ever thought, “Why did God create man in the first place?” Of course, I am presuming you believe in the biblical account of creation. Or is it assuming? I don’t know.

Anyway, assuming we’re on the same page, at least momentarily, has that thought ever crossed your mind? Don’t you figure God was doing quite well without us? Like, did he really need us to fulfill something lacking in him?

I’d hardly think so.

He didn’t need us for a tax exemption. He was already doing quite well financially.

We weren’t created so God could use us to win someone’s love and devotion. Nor were we created so the angels would have sympathy for God and say, “oh, just look how God has to put up with those kids. He sure is more patient than I’d ever be. If I was him, I’d have knocked those spoiled brats in the head a long time ago.”

Heaven was complete before we came along.

But the Earth was not.

And could it just possibly be Earth needed what only man could give it?

Brilliant Man?

20131006-230713.jpgKnowledge, inventions, scientific discoveries; these all seem to be increasing. Multiplying! Wouldn’t you agree that there are a lot of brilliant people in this world?

Just think of all the inventions within the last 60 years!

Since I’ve been on this earth, the world has seen some awesome things “invented”. For instance:

1955 TV Remote Control and the Polio Vaccine
1957 Birth Control Pill
1958 First Successful Commerical Jet Airliner Debuted
1960 Bar Codes First Used Commercially
1961 First Cordless Tool Released (Black and Decker)
1962 LED Invented by Nick Holonyak
1969 Smoke Detector
1970 ATM Machine
1973 First Cell Phone and MRI First Used for Medical Purposes
1978 GPS Launched
1980 First Online Shopping
1981 First Laptop Computer
1984 DNA Fingerprinting Technique Invented
1985 First Robotic Biopsies
1987 Prozac Invented
1992 Color Plasma Display Invented
1994 First Stents Approved for Use
1997 Toyota Pruis Released
1998 MP3 Player Invented
2001 iPod Released
2005 YouTube Launched
2007 iPhone released
2010 iPad Released First iPad released.

This is just a sample of man’s accomplishments over the last 60 years. The list would be much greater if I included all the space exploration inventions, military weapons technology, computer upgrades, and science/health related improvements.

Man has accomplished SO much; and I’m really glad, because I thoroughly enjoy my smartphone!

Some would even say that man can do anything he sets his mind to.

“Knowledge is Power!”

Now this may come as a shock to you, but man wouldn’t have had a clue to any of the discoveries listed if God hadn’t given him the desire, and the wisdom, to seek things out!

“Oh, no! You mentioned God!”

Yep!

I really pity the fool (Psalm 14:1) who will not believe in a Creator God, who thinks all this complex universe just “happened” to begin at some point eons and eons ago, but will celebrate man’s cunning and uncanny ability to invent such marvelous things! As if man is God!

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out even a rocket scientist couldn’t create what mankind has spent thousands of years studying; i.e. the heavens and the earth. You see, even with man’s brilliance, he’s no match for Almighty God! Man discovers only what God allows him to discover.

“The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.” (Deuteronomy 29:29 ESV)

When God created the heavens and the earth, He established every law of science KNOWN to man, AND those UNKNOWN. Electricity, computer science (mathematics), gravity, flight, etc, all were created by God to be discovered by man. All of God’s creation point to its Creator, and those who will listen to creation’s song will hear everything that breathes, and lives, praising God for His great and awesome works! Everything except God’s best; we can be too brilliant.

Mankind wants to try and live without the Source of Life. They want to shine without the Source of Light. They desire to be wise in their own eyes, and because of that, they’ll never witness the greatest “secrets” of all.

For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.” Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?” “For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.” (1 Corinthians 1:19, 20, 25 ESV)

If mankind would stop for just a moment and acknowledge God as the Designer/Creator of all things seen and unseen, it would be an easy step for them to agree all things were created FOR Him.

“For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities – all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” (Colossians 1:16-17 ESV)

If all things were created FOR Him, that means every “discovered” (uncovered) thing, law, principle, or equation has a God-given purpose!

One simple example is the internet and wireless technology. Man didn’t invent the technology any more than Al Gore invented the internet. God established the laws and principles and opened the minds of certain people to discover them. I realize I sound like I’m robbing man of a lot of credit; but think how God must feel at times!

But the technology was never intended to be used for evil; only good! Though people have used the internet for all kinds of wickedness, God still owns the rights for its usage; a tool for declaring to the nations the Glory of God!

The Word of God teaches there’ll be a day when knowledge will increase at an exponential rate! I believe that day is here. The Bible also seems to indicate that at the same time, stress and peril will increase; especially among Christ followers. Persecution and tribulation will increase, as well. Mankind has been duped by the devil to believe he, man, is the center of the universe and the creator of life. So, whenever man’s “deity” and wisdom is challenged, of course there’s going to be a battle.

The “battle” is not our call. Our call; God’s call for ALL MANKIND, the brilliant and the dim, is to KNOW HIM AND MAKE HIM KNOWN. Using the discoveries He’s allowed someone to find (or invent), let’s use them to declare to the nations the Glory of God, and the good news that Jesus Christ is Lord!

Mankind may be brilliant, but God is the source of his light!

Equal Rights

equal signIn the beginning, whenever that was, God created.

He created the Heavens and the Earth. He created everything in, above, under, and on the earth, giving each created object His blessing and mandate. Be fruitful and multiply.

Every plant, bird, and animal; all were equally adored, and blessed by their Creator.

Finally He created man (and woman) , the crown of His creation. Unlike His other creations, mankind was of a different class; an immeasurable “cut above” the rest. Mankind was created in God’s image, after His likeness. Created with the ability to believe, to reason, and to love.

God blessed them and gave them a mandate like the rest of His creation: be fruitful and multiply. However, He added one more point. He said, “Have dominion, rule, govern, the rest of creation. Specifically, rule over the plants and animals. Including every living thing that moves (or, crawls, creeps, glides swiftly across the ground) on the earth.”

All of God’s creation was placed into some kind of “family”. The dogs were in a family, the otters and the birds each had their own family; even whales were placed in a family. Though each species belonged to their own family, there was at least one common thread linking them back to their Creator. They each had the ability to reproduce after their own kind. Each species would continue God’s glorious creation! So to replicate what He began, He divided each species into two groups; male and female. Simply put, the male would bear the seed and the female would carry, and care for, the seed until gestation was finished.

And everything was great!

The Heavens and the Earth were in total harmony with each other. There was no question about what constituted a family, human rights, equal rights, or the like. God had established the Law of Life and, under His loving care, everything was “very good.”

However, man decided to listen to a particular serpent; one who yielded itself to be used by the devil. The devil, speaking through the serpent, suggested man’s “human rights” were being restricted, or violated, by the narrow minded Creator God. So the man and his wife believed him (remember, mankind was given the ability to believe) and yielded their “dominion, rule, and governing authority” over to the devil. Human rights were never the same.

Until Jesus.

Jesus said, “The Son of Man has come to seek and save (restore) that which was lost.” Luke 19:10
The apostle John wrote, “For this purpose was the Son of God revealed; to destroy (undo) the works of the devil.” 1 John 3:8

Jesus came to restore to mankind their human rights! The right to believe, reason, and love life at its best! Live and love without regret, pain, hellish consequences; without eternal death. The right to live with purpose, dignity, and usefulness. The right to reproduce, spiritually and naturally, new, glorious life.

No one’s ever cared more about human rights than Jesus. His words to the Samaritan woman (John 4), the Syro-Phoenician woman (Mark 7) and others indicate His care for each individual. But mankind, left to their own desires and opinions, cannot have true equality; cannot enjoy their true “human rights.” Selfishness, pride, greed, and lust will not allow people to treat others like they want to be treated. Instead, the “rule” is, “treat others like they’re going to treat you, only get to them first.” Mankind, without God’s active influence in their life, has a twisted opinion of equality. It has more to do with “my rights” than “our rights”, “my feelings and desires” verses “what’s best for society”, “my gratification” instead of “the Creator’s plan.”

The Lord has always desired equality for everyone. Regardless of sex, race, national origin, ethnicity, language, rich, poor, short, tall, bald, whatever! He wrote the book on it! He’s also the ONLY ONE Who can really set the moral standard for equality, for He is the ONLY ONE Who always has mankind’s best interest at heart.

Equality is tied directly to value and honor. Man, without God’s influence, will always value some more than others. We honor, prize, what we value. But God demonstrated our value to Him by giving His best, His Son, for us.

Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 6:9,10 – “Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived (or believe the wrong thing). Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.”

Paul listed a group of people in which, without Christ’s forgiveness and restoration, we are all part of. See the equality? Those who were “washed and sanctified”, regardless of their past, now are equal in God’s sight. They each have the same “benefits” as everyone else in the Kingdom of God. In fact, they are “heirs of God, joint-heirs with Jesus Christ.” Romans 8:17

There will be a Day, after all is said and done, when the Heavens and the Earth will once again be in total harmony with each other. All of Creation will be in unity, equality a non-issue, and redeemed humans experiencing the everlasting joy of fellowship with their Creator, Redeemer, and Savior.

With all the voices clamoring about equality and human rights, may we stop and hear God’s invitation to eternal life; planned before the foundation of the world.

God and man in eternal fellowship; the epitome of human rights.

Some “Friendly” Advice

20130115-184922.jpg

I really miss watching Bob Ross on television. Besides being one super artist, he was fun to watch and listen to. He’d talk about “friendly” clouds, trees, streams…he was one of the most “friendly” guys ever to be on the tube.

That’s why I used his “likeness” when I decided to write about “friends”.

Friends. Not just Facebook kind of friends, mere “followers” or acquaintances, but friends.

Friends. The dictionary defines “friend” as “one attached to another by affection or esteem”. Another definition says, “a person who has a strong liking for and trust in another”.

Friends. One of the most valuable “things” a person can have. A person could have all the money, power, land in the world; in fact, they could even own the moon. But without a friend, who can they share it with? Who can they trust?

The Word of God has much to say about friends. Who would know better than God? After all, He created the heavens and the earth. Everything seen and unseen was created by Him and for Him. But after 5 days, He wasn’t satisfied. He had no one to share His handiwork with. Pigeons and elephants were great, fish were wonderful, and birds were something else!

But the animal kingdom couldn’t attach themselves to Him by affection or esteem. Not like someone created in His image. So He made man, His best forever friend.

Studying the friendship between God and Adam should give us some advice about how friends should treat one another.

For instance, God gave Adam free reign of the garden, with one exception. One tree. A friend will have boundaries and a true friend will respect them. Manipulating your “friend”, making them feel bad or coercing them, because they have something you want but can’t get, is violating your friendship. God never laid a guilt trip on Adam, even though He told Adam some tough things.

God allowed Adam to be involved in God’s business. He let Adam set up the garden, name the animals, and look for a friend he could connect with. I think Adam and God talked about this issue, with the discussion sounding something like this:

Adam: “God, You’ve really created quite a world. Everything is neat and orderly, so majestic and beautiful. You’re quite good, you know. All these friendly trees, and birds, and animals, and…”
God: “But you’re not happy, are you, Adam?”
Adam: “No, really God…”
God: “Adam, I can tell. All these things are wonderful to see, but you need something more. I know you, Adam. You’re too much like Me to want to live life without a friend.”
Adam: “Yes, Lord, You’re absolutely right. I need someone besides You, no offense, God; but I need someone else I can attach myself to.”
God: “I tell you what I’ll do. If you’ll show yourself friendly, I’ll make you a forever friend. Give of yourself and see. Release part of yourself, just a rib will do. Give and it will be given to you, pressed and formed together. Something that will capture your heart, mind, and body.”

Well, Adam agreed and the rest is history.

The Word says, “He who desires friends, must show himself friendly.”

Real friends stick together, through thick and thin. Loyal to one another, despite the peril one may be facing. Could this be why Adam ate of the tree, after seeing Eve succumb to the slimy words of the serpent? Did Adam watch Eve change from life to death and decide to stay with her? Is that why he ate the fruit? Just wondering out loud.

Friends aren’t afraid of the advice a friend gives them. Trust is the reason why. Friends confide in each other. Yes, because of trust.

Friends would rather take a beating, than give up on a friend. A true friend will even, if necessary, give their life so a friend can live. Friend, I’m not just referring to Jesus!

Friends guard what they say about their friends, and defend the honor and reputation of their friends when necessary. The words they speak to and about their friends are healing, uplifting, guarding, and redemptive words.

As with the paralytic and his 4 friends mentioned in Luke chapter 5, friends grab hold of their friend’s need or problem. They work in harmony with other friends to help their friend rise up from their problems to live a life of joy and productivity.

Of course, I’ve described Jesus ministry as a Friend to the world, to you, to me.

But the Lord has made it clear, “You are My friends if you do what I’ve told you to do.”

What did He tell us to do? To “follow in His steps.” In other words, do likewise. “As He is, so are we in this world.”

Be a friend indeed.
