Following Me
Remember the old Cat Stevens song; “I’m being followed by a Moonshadow…”?
You may think I’m weird, but I still like his old music; even if he is kind of a strange cat.
Not exactly sure what a moonshadow is, but it doesn’t really matter. You see, I’m being followed by several different things; things that cause my life to be filled with the presence and power of God.
For example:
Goodness and mercy follow me.
“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” (Psalm 23:6 ESV)
The blessings of God are running after me, overtaking me.
“And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, if you obey the voice of the Lord your God.” (Deuteronomy 28:2 ESV)
The angels of God surround me.
“For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.” (Psalm 91:11 ESV)
Wealth and riches are in my house.
“Wealth and riches are in his house, and his righteousness endures forever.” (Psalm 112:3 ESV)
By the way, you may want to read the entire 112th Psalm…
Yes, there are some great things following me, accompanying me. After all, He’s promised to cause all things to work together for my good (Romans 8:28). And if I’m going to believe one scripture, I might as well believe them all.
Some folks have adopted the line, “If it weren’t for bad luck I’d have no luck at all…”, as their theme song. Others like to identify with Murphy’s Law. I’ve known some who just can’t “win for losing.”
But as for me, I’m not going to wait for fate, or hope Lady Luck is good to me.
Nope. Goodness and mercy follow me all my days. God is with me. God is for me (Romans 8).
That’ll do just fine.

A Package Deal
Day Twelve. Rest and Jesus; a package deal.
“Praise the Lord who has given rest to his people Israel, just as he promised. Not one word has failed of all the wonderful promises he gave through his servant Moses.” (1 Kings 8:56 NLT)“Has given rest…” is fulfilled in His Son, Jesus. He is our rest; our rest from trying to measure up, but always falling short. He is our rest in the midst of trying situations. He is our rest, for the rest of eternity.
Not one word has, or will, fail.
“Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices; my flesh also will rest in hope.” (Psalm 16:9 NKJV)
Where is your flesh resting? In worry, in fear? Why not let it rest in hope?
“Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for Him; do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass.” (Psalm 37:7 NKJV)We all give ourselves reasons to fret. The word gives us reasons to rest in the Lord.
Why should we spend our time waiting patiently for something bad to happen to us? You know, we sometimes do that. We’re just certain the sky’s going to fall in, or something.
Fretting is waiting for our worries to come to pass. Resting is waiting for God to have the final word.
“But those who wait on the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” (Isaiah 40:31 NKJV)Better than a power nap, waiting on the Lord renews our strength. If you need to mount up with eagle’s wings and fly, rest in the Lord. If you are involved in a race (and who isn’t at some point in time), then rest in the Lord.
His rest calms and rejuvenates your spirit. It makes you more sensitive to His voice; His direction.
Peace is a favorite companion of rest.
Enjoy the promise of rest.
Enjoy it as you seek the Lord with your whole heart.
Rest and Jesus. They’re a package deal.

Deliverance
The promises of God include deliverance.
Now, before you ask, “What kind of deliverance?” and begin writing down all the scriptures you know about Christians and demons… allow me to ask a question or two.
Question number one: does it matter what the method is labeled if it brings freedom to someone?
Question number two: to those who always want to treat Old Testament promises differently than ones found in the New Testament, is God less compassionate, less powerful, or any less Almighty now? Isn’t He the Unchangeable One?
No, it doesn’t matter. No, He hasn’t changed.
And yes, He is the Deliverer.
What can He, will He, deliver you from? Everything from A to Z.
Alcohol
Bigotry
Critical spirit
Demons
Egotism
Fear
Greed
Homosexuality
Insecurity
Jealousy
Kookiness
Lying
Malevolence
Nastiness
Ostentation
Pornography
Queasiness
Religiosity
Selfishness
Trouble
Unbelief
Violent spirit
Worry
X Rated thoughts
Yoke of addictions
Zany beliefsOf course, this list isn’t by any means all inclusive. After all, He is “…able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think…”(Ephesians 3:20 ESV).
Meditate on the scriptures below and watch God reveal to your heart what you need, and what He can do.
“Jonathan said to the young man who carried his armor, “Come, let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised. It may be that the Lord will work for us, for nothing can hinder the Lord from saving by many or by few.” (1 Samuel 14:6 ESV)
“Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head. And I will give the dead bodies of the host of the Philistines this day to the birds of the air and to the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, and that all this assembly may know that the Lord saves not with sword and spear. For the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give you into our hand.” (1 Samuel 17:45-47 ESV)
“You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with shouts of deliverance.” (Psalm 32:7 ESV)
“Behold, God is my helper; the Lord is the upholder of my life. He will return the evil to my enemies; in your faithfulness put an end to them.” (Psalm 54:4-5 ESV)
“Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! For he shatters the doors of bronze and cuts in two the bars of iron.” (Psalm 107:15-16 ESV)
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed…” (Luke 4:18 ESV)“He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son…” (Colossians 1:13 ESV)
Jesus. Our Deliverer.

Menagerie of Madmen
Well, it’s official. A Nigerian group of crazies joined forces with, and pledged allegiance to, the Islamic State goons.
How nice.
It’s reported that Boko Haram, a Nigerian Islamist (Jihadist and terrorist) militant group, has joined their brothers in arms in imposing Islamic rule both near and far.
Again, how nice.
Abubakar Shekau, leader of the terrorist group, both intellectually and spiritually, demonstrated his impeccable morality last year in April when his group kidnapped over 200 school girls. Announcing the girls have been converted to Islam, he also claims to be waging a Jihad against Christianity.
Beautiful.
Sharia law, meaning the “way”, or the “path”, is sure different from the ways of Jesus. For instance, when Jesus stood at the well in Sychar and conversed with the Samaritan woman, he didn’t call for someone to beat her with sticks and stones because she was shacking up with some dude.
He preached revelation, repentance, and restoration.
And forgiveness.
Well, the woman changed! Then, the townspeople changed.
Not so when the menagerie of madmen are in charge. Forgiveness? No way! “Beat the women, beat ’em good”, is the cry of the clan. “Spread the expectations far and wide; everyone is going to follow the laws of the wild animals. Every person, and every law.”
Or they die.
Especially the women.
Renounce Jesus or die.
Embrace Islam or die.
Grab a gun, put on your mask, and shout to Allah. Forget the inward voice calling you to repentance and submission to God Almighty. Ignore it; it will eventually go away.
How sad.
But here’s what’s even sadder to me. People who can’t tell the difference between Islam and Christianity.
Between the law and grace.
Between death and life.
Between condemnation and forgiveness, punishment and mercy, justice and justification.
Slavery and freedom.
Sharia law, enforced by the menagerie of madmen, isn’t even close to the “way” or “path” God had in mind. The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, provided not only a “way”, but one which included truth and life.
Jesus said…, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6 ESV)
Eventually, sometime within the next ten years or so, I’m expecting to see these Jihadists humbled, brought to their knees, by the power of God.
The menagerie of madmen will bow their knees to the God of the Christian.
Oh happy, yet sad, day.
Boko Haram, and groups like it, will NOT win or annihilate the world before the Lord’s appearance. Oh, they’re trying. But they don’t have that many guns, or masks, to affect the world.
How do I know?
I’ve already found the way, the truth, and the life. Justification and restoration, forgiveness and tenderness have been given to me through the only weapon Jesus ever used to defeat the enemy of my soul, the Chief Infidel himself; the devil.
The weapon called The Cross.

More
God is more!
God is more than the beauty I behold, the things I comprehend, and the wisdom I call my own.
God is more than the expanding universe, the ocean depths, and the sun’s incredible warmth.
God is more than my imagination, my deepest frustration, or the pain in my soul.
God is more than the box I build for Him, the words I write about Him, or the song I sing to Him.
God is more. Not more or less.
More.
Add up the value of all the great deeds ever done, and God’s righteousness is more.
Combine the brightness of every star to have graced the heavens with light; God’s light is brighter.
Incomparably brighter.
God does more, sees more, knows more, and is more. Even the sum of man’s wisdom is simple foolishness to God.
His ways are past finding out. His riches are unsearchable. His faithfulness reaches to a thousand generations…
…and more.
God is more. More than an explanation, an understanding, a measurement.
Yet He did something two thousand years ago that gave us a way to measure the depth of His love.
He sent His Son, gave up His Son, bruised and loaded His Son with our sin, sickness, rebellion, and death; all the wages of sin He bore in order to reveal His “more”.
Jesus is God’s “more”.
More.
More than my sin, my unfaithfulness, my infidelity.
More.
More than my failure, my lack of effort, and my small thinking.
More than I could possibly ever need.
Jesus. God’s “more”. The Father’s “more”.
All I’ll ever need.

Live Long and Prosper
As someone who loved to watch Star Trek as a kid, I love the classic picture of Leonard Nimoy, a.k.a. Mr. Spock. To me, his “live long and prosper” sign is just flat out cool!
This is probably one of the few aspects of life the Vulcans and the God of the Universe have in common. “Live long and prosper.” Or, another way to say it would be to quote the Apostle John; “Beloved, I wish (pray) above all things that you prosper and be in health, as your soul prospers.” 3 John 2
God wants each and every person to prosper and be in health. Regardless of your religion, denomination, status in life, He has plans to prosper you. Notice I said, HE has plans.
However, there is a part of John’s letter we sometimes overlook; “…as your soul prospers.”
Man was created as one person, yet with 3 parts. Someone once said it like this: “we are a spirit, we have a soul, and we live in a body (much like an astronaut uses a space suit).”
Paul referred to our makeup this way: “Now may the God of peace make you holy in every way, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ comes again.” 1 Thessalonians 5:23 NLT
Let’s talk about the soul. Basically it consists of our mind, will, and emotions. It is, along with our spirit man, the part of us that is eternal. Our body will perish, returning to dust, but the spirit and soul live on. From the time we were infants, our soul has been in training. We’ve generally been trained by our upbringing, surroundings, peers, schools, and people we trust. Of course, the training could have been good or bad, depending on the morals, faith, ethics, etc. of our “trainers”.
But in spite of how wonderful our trainers have been, there is not a one of us who doesn’t need to have their soul “retrained”, or “reprogrammed”. Another way of saying it would be, “everyone needs their soul saved.”
James tells us, “receive with meekness the…Word which is able to save your soul.” Save means to restore, deliver, and heal. Paul told the Romans, “don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of the mind.”
So our souls need to be saved and transformed! The more the soul is saved, trained, transformed by the Word of God, the more it prospers. As the soul prospers, the body and spirit prosper as well.
A prosperous soul. The mind, will, and emotions nurtured, transformed, and submitted to God’s Word. God’s Word is His will; so with a renewed mind, you can
I believe there are a lot of unhealthy desires among Christians. Listen to yourself talk. How prosperous is your soul? Pay attention to your reaction when trouble strikes. Have you learned contentment? “Godliness with contentment is great gain.” Are you continually striving for something bigger, better, faster, more memory…?
Is your soul prospering?
Do you feel the need to “pray” your needs to others or to God?
Preacher, what about your church’s finances? How long does it take “receiving” the offering? Are you always on the lookout for a better church, better salary, better program, or is God’s provision and calling enough?
Some believers play what I call, the “Ministry Money Market”, trying to get God to supply all their wants by giving to the “big name” ministries, rather than taking the time to retrain their mind and heart to hear the voice of God; to live and give accordingly.
Paul said, “But my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” In the preceding verses, Paul wrote about being content, giving sacrificially, giving with a heart of love. He wrote in other places about giving, not grudgingly but cheerfully.
The promises of God are not for those who obey out of duty, but who obey out of love.
After all, God doesn’t give to us out of duty. He gives out of His love. Paul told Timothy to “warn those who are rich in this world, that they The promises of God are not for those who obey out of duty, but who obey out of love.
After all, God doesn’t give to us out of duty. He gives out of His love. Paul told Timothy to “warn those who are rich in this world, that they be not high-minded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the Living God who richly gives us all things to enjoy.”
The soul that prospers is the soul that moves beyond the dictates of the flesh and society and begins applying the principles of God’s Word to each and every situation.
I believe even Mr. Spock would find that statement to be logical.

Too Good To Be True?
Day 10
There’s just something about the promises of God that are both exhilarating and discouraging.
Surprised at my choice of words?
Well, have you ever said this: “That sounds too good to be true”?
Then you should know what I mean.
At times, the promises of God SEEM too good to be true; but they ARE TRUE. You see, if not for God, there would be no promise.
But God is God and He’s GOOD and TRUE.
His promises are for whoever will listen to Him and do things His way. Obedience to God brings those things from the impossible, too good to be true realm into the realm of possibility and experience.
See what I mean as you read and meditate on the following scriptures:
“And if you faithfully obey the voice of the Lord your God, being careful to do all his commandments that I command you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth. And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, if you obey the voice of the Lord your God. Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the field. Blessed shall be the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground and the fruit of your cattle, the increase of your herds and the young of your flock. Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl. Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out.
“The Lord will cause your enemies who rise against you to be defeated before you. They shall come out against you one way and flee before you seven ways. The Lord will command the blessing on you in your barns and in all that you undertake. And he will bless you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. The Lord will establish you as a people holy to himself, as he has sworn to you, if you keep the commandments of the Lord your God and walk in his ways. And all the peoples of the earth shall see that you are called by the name of the Lord, and they shall be afraid of you. And the Lord will make you abound in prosperity, in the fruit of your womb and in the fruit of your livestock and in the fruit of your ground, within the land that the Lord swore to your fathers to give you. The Lord will open to you his good treasury, the heavens, to give the rain to your land in its season and to bless all the work of your hands. And you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow. And the Lord will make you the head and not the tail, and you shall only go up and not down, if you obey the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you today, being careful to do them, and if you do not turn aside from any of the words that I command you today, to the right hand or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them.” Deuteronomy 28:1-14 ESV
Blessed! Highly favored, protected, secure, and even pampered.
“Oh, fear the Lord, you his saints, for those who fear him have no lack! The young lions suffer want and hunger; but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.” (Psalm 34:9-10 ESV)
No lack. NO lack. Lack NO GOOD THING.
And these promises are NOT too good to be true.
“The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.
“As it is written, “He has distributed freely, he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.”
“He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness.” (2 Corinthians 9:6-10 ESV)
Look at the promises again. Notice the part we have to play in seeing the abounding grace of God revealed in our lives. Whoever sows, reaps; sow more, reap more.
Jesus said, “Seek first the kingdom of God…and everything you need will be provided for you.” Matt. 6:33 (paraphrased)
Once again, the words of Jesus seem too good to believe, to fathom, to comprehend.
But they are true. They are true for you, for me; for anyone who seeks first God’s kingdom.
God’s promise of provision. True and good!
Believe it.

Eight Life Changing Words
On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” (Mark 4:35 ESV)
“Let us go across to the other side.”
You may or may not know the story. Jesus had just finished telling his disciples about the importance of God’s word. He used phrases such as, “Pay attention to what you hear. The way you listen will determine how you believe”, “The Kingdom of God operates like a seed; planted (received), it grows”, and, “The seed is the Word of God.”
So shortly after Jesus taught them about God’s Word, he (God in the flesh) said, “Let us go across to the other side.” Those eight life changing words revealed his will to all who heard him speak.
Understand this truth: God’s Word is his will.
Whenever it is believed, received, and acted upon, it will come to pass; even if Heaven and earth have to be shaken or moved just to accommodate his plan.
When he spoke those eight life changing words, as far as he was concerned it was as good as done.
Unfortunately, his disciples weren’t as convinced. They were soon shaken; as the wind and waves increased, and their boat began filling with water.
After a while of bailing and worrying, they finally woke their sleeping savior with a revealing question; revealing just how much they didn’t understand what he had taught them.
“Don’t you care that we’re drowning?”
Jesus had taught them earlier how worry and care “choke the word”, causing the word to lose its power. The wind and waves, along with their own understanding of the sea, choked, crowded out the word Jesus had told them. Remember those eight life changing words, “Let us go across to the other side”?
Those words were enough to quiet the storm and bring them safely to the other side. Jesus demonstrated that very thing to them. He stood and spoke to the storm, “Peace, be still.”
And the storm immediately ceased.
He spoke to the storm as someone who knew it was God’s will to get to the other side. He spoke to his disciples as a teacher who wondered why his students hadn’t caught the previous lesson.
He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him (Mark 4:40 – 4:41 ESV)
The disciples completely missed his point.
When he calmed the wind and waves, it wasn’t to show his power, and it wasn’t to demonstrate his deity.
It was to show them, and us, just how much we need to hear, believe, and obey his word; allowing NOTHING to deter our faith.
Worry will rob us, and possibly, even kill us. It will definitely kill our faith. Sure, we may still be able to quote God’s will, preach God’s will, etc. We might even have a “Let us go across to the other side” ministry.
But if we let go of God’s word when it becomes challenged, we’ll not have learned the real meaning of the lesson.
Jesus taught them about how quickly satan comes to steal the word sown. He wants to steal it before it has a chance to grow roots; roots of faith.
Care, worries about life, and reasoning against the known will of God, can keep us from stepping out in obedience.
There are way too many people living on THIS side of the sea. And there are TOO MANY PEOPLE on the other side that God wants us to reach.
But we won’t fulfill his plan, or finish our course in a manner that pleases him, unless we really grasp those eight life changing words…
“Let us go across to the other side.”

Day Nine
God’s Provision #1
“Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8), is a true word from Heaven for every person who’s ever lived, and who is living now.
The word is: God’s mercy, compassion, power, love, and, of course, His promises have not faded away. Nothing Heaven has to offer is out of reach to the one who believes. Circumstances may look as bleak as they did to those standing next to the bitter waters of Marah, but God is the same. He provided for His own back then, and He’ll do the same thing today.
“When they came to Marah, they could not drink the water of Marah because it was bitter; therefore it was named Marah. And the people grumbled against Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?”
“And he cried to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a log, and he threw it into the water, and the water became sweet. There the Lord made for them a statute and a rule, and there he tested them.” (Exodus 15:23-25 ESV)
When there’s a need, God always has a tree for you and I. All His provision is found in His Son, and at the cross.
“For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, flowing out in the valleys and hills, a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive trees and honey, a land in which you will eat bread without scarcity, in which you will lack nothing, a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills you can dig copper. And you shall eat and be full, and you shall bless the Lord your God for the good land he has given you.”
“Take care lest you forget the Lord your God by not keeping his commandments and his rules and his statutes, which I command you today, and his rules and his statutes, which I command you today, lest, when you have eaten and are full and have built good houses and live in them, and when your herds and flocks multiply and your silver and gold is multiplied and all that you have is multiplied, then your heart be lifted up, and you forget the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, who led you through the great and terrifying wilderness, with its fiery serpents and scorpions and thirsty ground where there was no water, who brought you water out of the flinty rock, who fed you in the wilderness with manna that your fathers did not know, that he might humble you and test you, to do you good in the end. Beware lest you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth.’”
“You shall remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth, that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your fathers, as it is this day.” (Deuteronomy 8:7-18 ESV)
Yes, all we need, or could EVER need, is found in Jesus.
“But the land that you are going over to possess is a land of hills and valleys, which drinks water by the rain from heaven, a land that the Lord your God cares for. The eyes of the Lord your God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year.”
“And if you will indeed obey my commandments that I command you today, to love the Lord your God, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul, he will give the rain for your land in its season, the early rain and the later rain, that you may gather in your grain and your wine and your oil. And he will give grass in your fields for your livestock, and you shall eat and be full. Take care lest your heart be deceived, and you turn aside and serve other gods and worship them.” (Deuteronomy 11:11-16 ESV)
“And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19 ESV)
Remind yourself daily –
“Jesus Christ is all I need. He is more than my provider; He is my PROVISION.”
