The Know-It-All

Know-it-alls really bug me! All except for one, that is.

Am I jealous? Possibly a bit. But the world has many, MANY, people who are much smarter than this average joe. So I really don’t believe jealousy is the issue.

I don’t mind smart people, not at all. I can learn from people like that. Lord knows, and I know as well, I need all the help I can get. So yeah, I enjoy conversing with people smarter that I.

Remember a guy named Ken Jennings? He is the all time game show winner, winning Jeopardy 74 times! One smart dude!

I wonder how many possible topics there are in the world to discuss. Do you know? Thousands, maybe millions? More?

So how can any one person know everything? And, really, how can any one organization, age group, church, or country know everything?

How can mankind as a whole think they can know everything?

And what about people who try and figure out the God who is beyond comprehension?

Sure, sometimes I may act like I know it all (but I really know better, and so do you). But I have learned something, even if it’s not much. I’ve learned I can not out think, out smart, or out maneuver the Lord Almighty. His ways are past finding out, and He is beyond my ability and our collective ability to define.

Like I said, there are a lot of people smarter than I. People who are:

News reporters, journalists, preachers and masons,
Teachers, Rock Stars, policemen and handmaidens,
Computer geeks, farmers, soldiers and brokers,
House builders, swimmers, even some marijuana smokers.

Politicians, machinists, trash collectors and nurses,
Waiters, waitresses, and poets who write verses,
Taxi drivers, skin divers, and college professors,
Accountants, designers, misters and misses.

Tall folk, short people, black and multicolored,
Asian, African, Norwegian and others,
Rich people, poor folk, worried and care free,
Are just some of the folks who are smarter than me. (Should have been “I”, but it didn’t rhyme. Sorry)

I know I don’t know it all. In fact, I know just enough to make me dangerous.

But, just in case you forget to ask me, I’ll tell you what I DO know:

I know that my Redeemer lives. I know Jesus came to give me, and everyone else, life; abundant life.

I didn’t have to memorize the facts, I simply had to receive them by believing them. Hey, everyone believes something about God; whether you’re smarter than the average bear or not.

I know that in His house are many mansions. I know He has gone to prepare a place for me, and since He went, He will come again and receive me unto Himself.

This I know. More than I know anything else.

I know I am born of God, filled with His Spirit, surrounded by angels, and blessed going out and coming in.

I know God has placed me into His Body, and anoints me with gifts and abilities as He sees fit.

I know I have an enemy, an adversary referred to as the devil. I know that when I submit to God and resist the devil, he must flee.

I know God is faithful and just to forgive me of all my sin; past, present and future. Even when I act like a “know-it-all”, if I confess my sin He forgives me and cleanses me of all unrighteousness.

I know my wife is the only woman in the world for me. I don’t have to wonder, guess, or call Psychic Suzy. I don’t have to shop around using internet chat rooms.

I don’t know it all, but I know what I know. I learned that from my dad. Yes, I DID learn a couple of things from him.

Yes, know-it-alls irritate me. I bet you feel the same way about them, don’t you? Yet, like me, YOU are convinced that what YOU KNOW is correct, right?

But did YOU know that God Almighty wants YOU to know HIM? Personally, intimately?

“Seek the Lord while he may be found; call upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:6-9 ESV)

Maybe you’re not as smart as Ken Jennings. Perhaps you’re a rocket scientist and only believe what you can reason out.

Sorry, God doesn’t make sense, and His gospel does seem too good to be true.

But the smartest thing you will ever do in this life is plan wisely about the next. And in order to do that, you’ll need help from the One who really is the Know-It-All.

Let’s talk about know-it-alls who bug you. Are you bothered by pesky Christians, always acting like they know more about God than you? Do you know what it is about them that irritates you so much?

Come, let’s reason together…
