Sexual Sin

Sexual sin isn’t a new thing or an isolated incident that happens just now and then. It isn’t only a teen problem or an adult sin. It doesn’t automatically occur with one gender more than the other.

Sin? What’s that? Sin is an offense against God, His statutes and laws. In short, it’s doing the wrong thing. An offense against somebody is an offense against God. Living solely for one’s selfish pleasure, regardless of its effect on themselves or others, is an offense against God.

It is sin.

Sexual sin is no respecter of people’s upbringing, faith, lack of faith, social status, color, or even political ideology. It isn’t a liberal or conservative issue.

Sexual sin has grabbed hold of people who are pro-life, as well as people who are pro-choice. It isn’t an accident, it’s not funny, it has spiritual and psychological ramifications, can cause deep wounds, and isn’t something to ignore.

Sexual sin is promoted at almost every magazine stand, by many television shows and commercials, and thousands and thousands of places online.

Sexual sin could include something as “innocent” as a daydream; thoughts locked on sexual fantasies. It might be watching a sexually explicit movie, or reading a book or magazine. Maybe it’s just a “chance” meeting which turns into a night on the town and in the bed. It may even take place between a husband and wife, where tenderness and honor has given way to selfishness, violence, and humiliation! Sexual sin.

Sexual sin is all about the most important person in the world: “me”.

The person who commits sexual sin cares more about pleasing themselves than their partner.

It can look morality right in the eye and not blink. It feels it has a right to be “taken care of”, no matter the cost.

Unless stopped, it will grow and grow until it has demolished any and every relationship. It isn’t capable of having a lasting relationship because sexual sin is not based on love; it is based on lust. And LUST ONLY CARES ABOUT SELF.

Marriage alone does not stop, and cannot control, sexual sin.

Rapists do not just wake up one day and say, “Good morning, world. What shall I do today? Oh, I know! I’ll go rape a woman.” It doesn’t happen that way.

Pedophiles don’t suddenly start looking for a little kiddie to molest. It begins with sexual sin.

Like I said before, sexual sin isn’t something new. And unfortunately, it’s not new to the church. Paul had to address it with the Corinthian church.

“When I wrote to you before, I told you not to associate with people who indulge in sexual sin. But I wasn’t talking about unbelievers who indulge in sexual sin, or are greedy, or cheat people, or worship idols. You would have to leave this world to avoid people like that. I meant that you are not to associate with anyone who claims to be a believer yet indulges in sexual sin, or is greedy, or worships idols, or is abusive, or is a drunkard, or cheats people. Don’t even eat with such people. It isn’t my responsibility to judge outsiders, but it certainly is your responsibility to judge those inside the church who are sinning. God will judge those on the outside; but as the Scriptures say, “You must remove the evil person from among you.” (1 Corinthians 5:9-13 NLT)

Actually, sexual sin isn’t much different than sins of greed, idolatry, abuse, drunkenness, or cheating. Because it’s all about self. Pleasing self. One way or another, the need for sexual fulfillment must be met.

It may cost someone their dignity, honor, virtue, reputation, or even their life; but sexual sin doesn’t care. It WILL have its needs fulfilled, regardless!

Sexual sin is the opposite of love.

“Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.” (1 Corinthians 13:4-7 NLT)

Love is patient and kind. Sexual sin says, “NOW, and no delays!”

Love doesn’t demand its own way. Sexual sin DEMANDS at the point of violence (physical, emotional, or spiritual).

Love says, “we’ll wait to have sex until we’re married”. Sexual sin just laughs at such an old-fashioned idea.

Love says, “I will honor you and protect you in every way I can”. Sexual sin is, first and foremost, out to conquer.

It’s too bad such a beautiful thing has been treated in such an ugly manner. But that’s what happens when self thinks it’s smarter than God; when the creation knows more than the Creator.

Unfortunately, it’s going to keep on happening; as long as people believe the lie that promotes living for the moment, the pleasure, and self. God said it’s to be expected.

But NOT in the church. Not among those who have professed the Lordship of Jesus, placing Him on the Throne of their life INSTEAD OF SELF.

There is a way to overcome sexual sin. In fact, Jesus overcame it for everyone. Our part? Turn from selfishness to God for help, for forgiveness, and freedom.

I have experienced the selfishness and the freedom. The freedom is MUCH better!
