The Point Of No Return

IMG_7369.JPG

Are you aware that today someone will do something they never thought they’d do?
If you’d asked them a year earlier, “Do you ever see yourself doing thus and so?”, like stealing, raping, cheating on their spouse, or even murdering, they would’ve undoubtedly answered, “No way!”
But today they’ll do it.

Brand new sexual addictions will begin today. New addictions to drugs and/or alcohol will wrap their hellish chains around some poor soul as well.

Today.

And someone will take a step toward new levels of violence; even to the point of murder.

Today.

Not planned. It just happens.

Or does it?

There are things which I have done that I would have sworn I’d never do.

But I did them.

How about you?

Think of people you’ve read about in the history books; Hitler, Stalin, and others. Adolph began life as an innocent child, but ended as an evil, demon possessed maniac.

Ted Bundy wasn’t born a murderer. He BECAME one, one bad choice at a time.

Again, how about you?

Are you aware that every living soul is capable of committing atrocities even more heinous than those of Hitler or Bundy?

I realize it’s hard to believe, but it’s true.

“The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is?” (Jeremiah 17:9 NLT)

(Hint: ask God)

Wickedness grows to uncontrollable proportions when we allow little compromises to pass unchecked. When our mind excuses wrong behavior because it doesn’t seem “that” bad, or it has become sociably acceptable, we don’t realize just how close we are to the point of no return.

“That sure sounds ominous…”

Welcome to the macabre.

Imagine a stick of dynamite. Let it represent the evil you believe you are incapable of doing.

Light the fuse, but just for a moment. Now quickly extinguish it. Whew! Great, no evil done.

Now, let it be lit again, and again, and again…

No problem! Each time it is extinguished before anything really bad happens.

Until one day…

KKKKAAAABBBBOOOOOOOOMMMM!

You’ve just reached the point of no return.

And that’s how the progression goes for those have had their lives and eternities destroyed.

That’s the point in a life that Paul talked about in Romans, chapter one:

“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures. THEREFORE GOD GAVE THEM OVER in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

“For this reason GOD GAVE THEM OVER to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error.

“And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, GOD GAVE THEM OVER to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful; and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.” (Romans 1:18-32 NASB)

God gave them over…

Though He never intended for His creation to be subjected to His wrath, they reached the point of no return; one action, one thought, one compromise at a time.

What are you doing about your own life?

How many times do you think you can light the fuse and get away with it?

Don’t bet on it.
