Ten Reasons Why Our Words Should Be Few

1. In the multitude of words, sin abounds.
“Too much talk leads to sin. Be sensible and keep your mouth shut.” (Proverbs 10:19 NLT)

2. Wisdom is recognized by its few, well-chosen words.
“A truly wise person uses few words…” (Proverbs 17:27 NLT)

3. Uncontrolled tongues can start fires.
“And the tongue is a flame of fire…It can set your whole life on fire…” (James 3:6 NLT)

4. Death and life are in the power of the tongue.
“The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences.” (Proverbs 18:21 NLT)

5. A fool is recognized by what he says.
“Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise; when he closes his lips, he is deemed intelligent.” (Proverbs 17:28 ESV)

6. Words are carriers of creative or destructive power.
“…wrongdoers…sharpen their tongues like swords and aim their bitter words like arrows.” (Psalm 64:2-3 NLT) “A fool’s proud talk becomes a rod that beats him, but the words of the wise keep them safe.” (Proverbs 14:3 NLT)

7. Worlds are framed, constructed, by words.
“By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God…” (Hebrews 11:3 ESV) “and he upholds the universe by the word of his power…” (Hebrews 1:3 ESV)

8. Words are seeds to a harvest.
“The sower sows the word.” (Mark 4:14 ESV) “Fools’ words get them into constant quarrels; they are asking for a beating.” (Proverbs 18:6 NLT) “…You will always harvest what you plant.” (Galatians 6:7 NLT)

9. Words of faith don’t return void; they accomplish what we send them to do.
“It is the same with my word. I send it out, and it always produces fruit. It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper everywhere I send it.” (Isaiah 55:11 NLT) “And Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God. Truly, I say to you, whoever says…and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him.” (Mark 11:22-23 ESV)

10. Guarded lips, guarded life.
“Whoever guards his mouth preserves his life; he who opens wide his lips comes to ruin.” (Proverbs 13:3 ESV)

Can you think of other reasons why it’s better to let your words be few? If so, what are they?
